time of the year mate, time of the year. if we move together, it would get rid of one of the negatives of not knowing anyone, again.

Victoria is beautiful, right on the water, very english style pubs. Would be a great place to live, although I have often wondered if I would get some sort of island fever. It is a retirement hub so there are a lot of retirees.

ahh right thanks, i knew about vic and sanich, but somehow thought nanaimo had its own to. i had heard that about victoria too, the retirement thing, which i find a little surprising. i also specifically asked about the island fever thing, but was greeted with the typical offhand, "well its only an hour on a ferry" AN HOUR!! like crossing the bloody channel.

Now I'm off out to bring in our two outside hoses which are frozen solid because I didn't take them off the taps and drain them when I should have.:(

Mmm, me too Steve.

You may jest - but actually, just the thought of starting all over again - again - is exhausting :sneaky: but keep us posted

i know, the thought of yet another application, tests, lie detector, physical, background checks, paying for all that, then the move, house sale, house buy, new schools, uurrghhh. i think as we did the first one, you girls should do the second one and keep us in the manner to which we are accustomed.

I spoke to a few people who have lived and worked there and the opinion varied between too quiet to just right. a place to go to retire came up a bit and nanaimo in particular a bit far out with not much there. so just wondering how you found day to day life for shops, schools, drive to victoria and the local cops, as thats what i would end up doing most probably. thanks rae.

Hi rae :)

I still think Nanaimo is pretty quiet but then I came from Bristol which has give or take 500k ... I think there are 80k(ish) here.

When you say 'far out' do you mean geographically or are you talking hippy? :o
If the latter then yep, it's probably pretty similar to the rest of BC, if you mean the setting then it's not too bad ... from the 2 ferry terminals you get to Van in 90mins (approx) plus there are 3 or 4 seaplane companies serving Van, Vic, Tofino etc.
Any further north than here & it gets slightly more difficult to get to the mainland.
I really like Van & Vic and would love to live in Vancouver but housing costs are high, plus the traffic would do my head in ... it takes my OH about an hour & 20 to reach Victoria in the mornings but then another 30-60mins to travel the last 10mile to work in the traffic! We are relatively happy with being able to visit Van in an hour & a half or Mt Washington 90mins in the other direction.

Don't know much about the cops here to be honest, apart from the ones that are attached to the high schools I don't know any ... personally I think there should be a lot more of the ones I see downtown occasionally with the cycles & the lycra uniforms

I think the whole island has more than it's fair share of retirees but Nanaimo is a university city too & my 2 kids at 17 & 20 have plenty of friends their own age.

There are 33 elementary schools, 5 high schools, 1 private & 1 alternate schools so plenty of kids around. There are loads of shops, banks etc, a couple of cinemas (dated but show up to date movies) an Ice Skating rink, 2 pools etc etc

Sooooo ... it's OK, a bit 'yee har' ~ def not as attractive as Van or Vic but friendly & relaxed, the weather is great, less rain than the mainland but still a bit like living in the movie 'The Truman show'

most kind of you to give me such detailed info, thanks.
more the geography than anything, not too fussed at this lotus rep BC has, i'm not that right wing, yet, age seems to be sending me that way though.
with regard to the 'yee har' thing, seems like thats pretty much all of canada small town wise, or we cannot adjust, one or the other.
anyway thanks again.

Oops, just read your comment about an hour on the ferry  & there's me saying it's only 90mins!!

You can tell the locals from the tourists on the bloody thing, the tourists are taking photos & pointing whilst the locals are led across 3 seats, snoring & drooling, counting the minutes till the journey is over

Sounds like you're fitting right in! :D

We're taking 63 grade sevens  on the ferry to Science World later this month ... they've already been warned about playing the Whale game  ~ one of them shouts 'WHALE' & then they run from one side of the ferry to the other seeing how many tourists they can fool

As you said Ann one week we are basking in record setting highs in the 30's a couple of weeks later we are setting records in the other direction.

This mornings overnight low of -16°C beats all to hell the old record of -13.3°C set way back in 1928.:frown:
