So where is autumn ?
OK - who stole autumn?
I know Spring can be a bit like "blink and you've missed it" in many parts of Canada, but I wasn't aware that Autumn has succumbed to the same fate. One week it was 32 degrees in sunny Calgary, and the next it was trying to snow (pathetic attempt admittedly) and now the weather is currently struggling to drag itself above zero degrees. I saw a few yellowing trees then bang, a winter landscape. Where were my gentle, calm and colourful evenings? where was my Indian summer? Where was that one month window open to plant my spring bulbs before the earth became encrusted with an icy layer? So who's got autumn? C'mon - who is keeping it to themselves? Give! :frown::p |
Re: So where is autumn ?
you know I was thinking the same thing - theres still snow on the ground here and on Friday it was -15 with the wind chill. (thats a drop of 49 degrees in a couple of weeks conveniently missing that other season in the middle that someone has deemed uneedable ((is that a word?)) this year).
I'm with you Ann I didn't expect to be hauling water to the cows this early :( |
Re: So where is autumn ?
I was out in the forest yesterday- it was definitely weird seeing green leaves on top of the snow.
This time last year it was t-shirt weather. I love the white stuff though, so bring it on! |

I spoke to a few people who have lived and worked there and the opinion varied between too quiet to just right. a place to go to retire came up a bit and nanaimo in particular a bit far out with not much there. so just wondering how you found day to day life for shops, schools, drive to victoria and the local cops, as thats what i would end up doing most probably. thanks rae.
Victoria is beautiful, right on the water, very english style pubs. Would be a great place to live, although I have often wondered if I would get some sort of island fever. It is a retirement hub so there are a lot of retirees. |

Hi rae :) I still think Nanaimo is pretty quiet but then I came from Bristol which has give or take 500k ... I think there are 80k(ish) here. When you say 'far out' do you mean geographically or are you talking hippy? :o If the latter then yep, it's probably pretty similar to the rest of BC, if you mean the setting then it's not too bad ... from the 2 ferry terminals you get to Van in 90mins (approx) plus there are 3 or 4 seaplane companies serving Van, Vic, Tofino etc. Any further north than here & it gets slightly more difficult to get to the mainland. I really like Van & Vic and would love to live in Vancouver but housing costs are high, plus the traffic would do my head in ... it takes my OH about an hour & 20 to reach Victoria in the mornings but then another 30-60mins to travel the last 10mile to work in the traffic! We are relatively happy with being able to visit Van in an hour & a half or Mt Washington 90mins in the other direction. Don't know much about the cops here to be honest, apart from the ones that are attached to the high schools I don't know any ... personally I think there should be a lot more of the ones I see downtown occasionally with the cycles & the lycra uniforms  I think the whole island has more than it's fair share of retirees but Nanaimo is a university city too & my 2 kids at 17 & 20 have plenty of friends their own age. There are 33 elementary schools, 5 high schools, 1 private & 1 alternate schools so plenty of kids around. There are loads of shops, banks etc, a couple of cinemas (dated but show up to date movies) an Ice Skating rink, 2 pools etc etc Sooooo ... it's OK, a bit 'yee har' ~ def not as attractive as Van or Vic but friendly & relaxed, the weather is great, less rain than the mainland but still a bit like living in the movie 'The Truman show' |

As you said Ann one week we are basking in record setting highs in the 30's a couple of weeks later we are setting records in the other direction. This mornings overnight low of -16°C beats all to hell the old record of -13.3°C set way back in 1928.:frown: |

On a positive note: Could mean a good start to the ski season - they're already making snow at Nakiska and COP  |

Re: So where is autumn ?
Ha ha, yes we've been checking regularly. Went to pick up our passes last weekend and the girl told us about the planned opening, I have been getting a tad over excited since then. Lake Louise also planning a Nov. 6th opening. Keep that snow coming.
Haven't thought too much about the ski clubs - we're at Lake Louise between Christmas and New Year and thought we'd put the kids into the three day block lessons they do there (they did that last year and really liked it). Would you recommend the Nakiska ski clubs? |

Would you recommend the Nakiska ski clubs? What is good and worth doing are the six week (one 2hr session per weekend) lessons for the kiddies at Nakiska We are revving up for the season , Sun Peaks for New Year, Fernie for family day and we can't quite decide about spring break- considering back to Silver Star or Big White, or down to Whitefish or Silver mountain in US. Will probably fit a weekend at Panorama and Kicking Horse. Can really really recommend Emerald Lake Lodge booked through RCR. This has a very high rack rate and we got rooms for $110 last season. It was a really special place to stay. Gryph |
