So what should you be entitled to?

I dont know what limits the goverment sets on numbers, but clearly we have an international responsibility to help and do our part, However, that has to be tempered against finite resources and the "will of the people".

That is a three bed end terrace, it's not a palace, it's just a regular house. If it was in Acrington you would pay 20,000 for it. But because it's in London village then it's a 1m mansion.
So saying they are living in a 1m house is a bit of a loose statement IMO. There are 6 in a three bed house, you do the maths, who put them there in the first place.
No they still should not smash it up, but it happens. They are not a westernized family so living in shite is ok for them. They maybe just wanted to feel more at home?

Didn't anybody see the TV program the other day on British Job Centres?
They can't chuck money out fast enough.

Quite scary (and funny at times) at the thought of some of the people who were found not guilty or acquited etc.

Jesus Wept, the Daily Mail and "Reality" TV being used in evidence. No danger of sensationalism or overreaction there then.

Interesting thread. Love the use of "entitled". I'm not big on people who think they are entitled to stuff just because that's the system.
Just the other day, CBC had a program on about whether or not we should still support our atheletes to the tune of $100 million a year. Couldn't believe (actually I can) the amount of bleeding hearts saying the money should go to social housing, helping the homeless, etc. - give it to the atheletes, at least they'll actual make some use of it.

Sadly I lived around the corner from this charming family.. quite possibly some of the most unpleasant people I've come across. A shop keeper I knew told the finger jugglar to get a job; his response was "Why? Now every day is Sunday!".
Welfare is not a hand out but a hand up, regardless of how you came into a situation where you TEMPORARILY need assistance. It should be capped at a maximum value to stop folk of whatever nationality sitting on their jacksies longterm enjoying a holiday at tax payers expense, and for added emphasis, there should also be a maximum period payable. If you can't afford what you want, then adjust your expectations.. and if your benefits stop, then clearly you need to get a job fast.
I lived in the UK for 6 years 11 months, 1 week, initially on a working holiday visa, then on a work permit. I worked consistently, apart from three days when I first arrived, and I was not 'eligible' for any benefits or assistance*, and when I was made redundant, I had 28 days to leave the UK. I was 22 days off being eligible to apply for UK citizenship.
Unfortunately the sense of entitlement, whether indigeous, refugees, or immigrants - is not a UK only mentality.. Its present in New Zealand, Ireland and Australia (that I've so far encountered), and I am confident I'll see the same in Canada eventually. Sadly I don't think anyone will elect me PM anywhere anytime soon... but its a great 'grumpy old lady' daydream.
* I should disclose that even if I had been eligible, my earnings would have disqualified me.

Guilty as charged. Obviously not a 'genuine' asylum seeker and a complete scrounger who is screwing the system for every penny so send him back. Job done, thread finished. (make sure he finishes renovating his BMW ready to sell first though)

So you think people on low incomes who don't own a house should subsidise those that do?
