Safety features like more mass, more momentum, a high center of gravity and a big flat front end at pedestrian pelvis height to make sure that anyone hit is mowed over rather than thrown clear? What safety features does it have that a car of comparable expense doesn't?

At a guess I would say over 50% of cars in Ontario dont have winter tires and the majority get by just fine. Legal enforcement similar to Quebec would be total overkill here.

And that's coming from a proponent of snow tires for those with the money to throw at them.

OH brought a grand Cherokee a few years ago we lived in Hampshire then, the first week i spun it after hitting some oil on the corner ( honest ) went through a hedge a ditch and a fence, didn't put a mark on it Had to drive along the inside of the field until i found a gate to get out of
That was safer for me

It wouldnt be total overkill, unless offcourse GTA stays above 7c for most of the winter months If the legal enforcement, was coupled to the validation of you car insurance, as in Switzerland and i think also Austria and Germany, the stupid discussion on winter tires would end over nite

I understand that all season tires "start" to lose their grip at 7°C but just how much grip is lost at let's say between zero and 7°?

I'm with Iain I think the law in some provinces would be overkill.

if they improved your stoping distance by only 10cm in that temp range and this ment you didnt hit the small child on the road would you consider buying them
By not buying them you havent done all you can for road safety, in my mind its up their with "Drunk Driving" "Seat Belts" etc. etc.etc.

Offcourse you are, but i think on this issue "Our" opinions should not be asked, it should be law. The same as drink driving is a law, not just left up to us to decide,,,

Not necessarily there are at least two exceptions.

The Nokian WR and Nokian WRG2

As far as I know these two are the only all weather radials that meet Rubber Association of Canada severe snow performance requirements, i.e. the snowflake symbol.

We have the WR's on Mrs_P's Corolla and the WRG2's will be the next new tires on my Camry.
