We do stuff for it, wear poppies and the Queen lays a wreath, we just don't bang on about it like here. Its a choice in the UK, its mandated to school children here.

Watched some TV news (Global BC it was I think), it was the lead story and they went on about it for about 20 minutes. I've never seen coverage like that before. Usually it's a couple of mins about the queen at the cenotaph and that's it.

Some more history that I may have posted about before...apologies if so but I'm getting old and losing my memory.

Some years ago I met an old lady who had been in Sarajevo and saw the Archduke being shot. She said it was a lovely sunny day, and it quite ruined her outing. She was a young teenager then.

One of the joys of talking to old people is hearing about history first hand.

the fact that when describing the assissination of the Archduke, it was not as shocking as one would have thought. Someone dies and the memory was of a sunny day ruined.

Oops, my fault I didn't explain it well. That was what she thought at the time. A 13 year old's day out was ruined. She had no idea of what was to come. I suppose you are right that she wasn't too shocked at seeing someone shot, but maybe she didn't realise that he had been killed. Maybe she was a farm girl and used to seeing dead stuff.

In which case she would be unfazed by Oink and Alan flogging their dead horse?
