A couple of those applied to me moving to Canada from the US, California specifically, shocking when there was no liquor at grocery stores, gas stations, etc and the bank account charge was at the time weird because US banks hadn't yet started charging for accounts yet, at least in So. California where every bank had free accounts, car insurance in BC was shocking too, even now while its $120 is still double what the same coverage would cost in California. Milk in BC is packaged the same way as Western US, so it wasn't shocking and 10-20km under the speed limit is still slow compared to 10-20 miles over you need to go in California to keep with the flow and not impede traffic.
Biggest culture shock was lack of Mexican food, I wasn't expecting that.

Archaeologists in eastern Newfoundland may have found what could be the oldest British coin found in Canada.
Coined between 1493 and 1499.
Elizabethan coins were found in the same location in 2001, and were at the time the oldest british coins found in Canada.
The location they were found was/is a plantation settled in 1610 by Bristol merchant John Guy and one of the earliest British settlements in North America.

So Alberta almost didn't exist.
Seems even back in the olden days Ottawa didn't care about the west much.
"Sir Frederick’s original goal was to create a large western province called Buffalo. However, then prime minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier wanted to avoid giving too much power to Western Canada and therefore divided the West into two provinces: Alberta and Saskatchewan."

Maybe just tear them down and build new buildings, neither seem to be in good enough shape to save, let alone pay this kind of money to try and keep them from being vandalized or set on fire.
"Two notorious Downtown Eastside hotels the city purchased in November 2020 remain vacant one year later and have racked up roughly $1 million in costs related to security and other charges to protect them for further deteriorating or catching fire."

Neither are housing people and while the one is going to be torn down, why save the other, just build 2 new low income housing buildings and be done with these 2 falling apart unsafe buildings.

I agree, the only thing worth saving is the Balmoral's neon sign. I stayed in the Regent in the late 70's and in the 80's and it was already a bit seedy. Once, I was having a beer in the Balmoral and saw about a dozen young native people wearing t-shirts saying Balmoral Brats, and I wondered what sort of team they were on. Before long 2 men playing pool began arguing. One broke his cue in half and the other one grabbed a ball from the table. Those kids all jumped up and rushed them, cramming in so they could hardly move, let alone fight, and then moved in lock-step to the door and pitched them both into the street. When the "team" came back in the bartender drew them each a glass of beer. They were the bouncers! I'm still impressed.

I woke up at stupid o'clock and turned on the tv, and Remembrance Day programming was still happening, so started watching the Cliff Chadderton/Legion production The D-Day Dodgers about the war in Italy, and they were showing the 1st Special Service Force part in the Monte Casino battle (in which they took horrific casualties). Checked my email and the knife store has the reproduction dagger I wanted back in stock. There was enough recycled bottle money in my Paypal account, and you don't screw around with coincidence like that so I ordered it.

Edit: The sticker beneath those patches is a bit dark, but effective: https://www.worthpoint.com/worthoped...card-525654151

Your knife made me turn to my office shelf and take down a couple of my most treasured possessions: my late grandfather's WW2 service knife and his REME Tam O'Shanter (hat). He was a great man.
