If anyone in Vancouver is interested. There is a forum tomorrow the 15th in Vancouver on food banks in BC.

Talks about role of food banks in BC, and what can be done to reduce their need.

Tickets are apparently free.
I would have loved to have gone to this but i have other plans tomorrow. I'll let my work colleagues know as one of the outreach workers could attend.

Or "Whitebait Christmas"

It's just a sad state of affairs when so many have to rely on food banks just to eat. More and more people going to food banks work full-time, but rent eats up so much of their income, they just don't have anything left for food after other necessary costs.

In deciding if I should take that job or not, we decided to look at city's closer to the airport, but rents are so high there now, no way anyone can rent and work a job that pays 11.35 which is likely why the companies and others there are having such a difficult time finding workers, but you know it's too much to raise wages. Rents closer in pet friendly were all over 1,000/month. We are now just looking to move to small town middle of nowhere BC, not ideal being isolated, but only way to survive. There just is no affordable medium sized city in this province anymore. Kamloops, Kelowna, Victoria are all in the same boat with high rent.

I don't think those who do not fall into the high rent low wage bracket really know how hard it is to eat and have a place to live for so many.

Some of us do, JS.

So, what jobs are available in the town where you currently live (Chilliwack? Or did you move again?) & are managing (even if it's really really hard) to pay the rent?

It might not be a job you want to do, or even a good job, but sometimes "needs must" & any job is better than none.

Sometimes one might need to do more than one PT job to make ends meet. I did/do. & I freelance too. I juggle a lot. & I know about foodbanks as both beneficiary & (volunteer) administrator.

If I knew you personally, I might be inclined to go the "tough love" route, & ask/say "any job is better than none when you need one. Getting money coming in is better than not". But I don't, so I won't

Moving isn't the answer.

We used to be smug about that in the UK. Not any more.

I don't have the earning power to physically earn enough to pay the market rents. I have no in demand skills or experience which as time goes on has made finding jobs more difficult, along with the gaps and short stints at jobs. My mental health problems are more life altering then may appear at times, I also get no real treatment for it, since MSP doesn't cover therapy. I do see a psychiatrist a few times a year, but I would not say it's treatment since the visits are 10 mins, and he has taken me off all medication due to none tried actually improving anything, his suggestion as all before is to seek long term therapy, but that is costly, and not something we can do at the moment. My wife did have extended benefits, however mental health services was a max of $500 per year and only registered psychologist, average fee is $180 so $500 is really only 2 possibly 3 visits. But we no longer have that coverage. But shows even with extended health how limited options are for mental health. The insurance covered $1,500 per year for instance for acupuncture. $1,00 for chiropractor, but a mere $500 for mental health.

I am going to a job center this week, they may or may not have some options for some skills training.

I am offered the same wages in 2016 as I was making in 2006, yet rent has doubled just about. I am sure food is up a fair amount since 2006 as well.

Only job thus far that has been offered to me is 110km one way, so 220 round trip, not feasible for 11.35/hr, gas alone will run 400/month at minimum at today's prices.

I would work locally, just so far no interviews locally which is why I am not working currently.

I apply daily for jobs, I also look in Abby since its only 30 or so mins away. Considering the difficulty its been just getting a job, 2 jobs likely wont happen soon, I struggle to just find a job.

Our lease is up in 2 months, so long term we cannot stay where we are anyhow, so moving is happening no matter what. Renting doesn't lead to stability these days. We are moving due to lease not being renewed due to the owners desire to sell, easier to sell an empty unit vs one with tenants. It's a landlords market these days for renting, tenants don't get much choice or options.

And I mean society in general not understanding, not specific to here. Obviously many do understand.

My random stuff of the day.

I not only dislike earthquakes. I blimmin' well hate the things. The double jobby midnight Sunday was dreadful and all the aftershocks do the nerves no good at all.

Too random - I am on the random thread after all - & very dangerous.

Just spent 3 nights sleeping on our lounge floor in getaway quick clothes, as too much of a woosie to sleep upstairs at the moment. Even the cat has stuck like glue since the ....'event'

We may have our woes but at least we are not maimed and dead .

I am 100% in support of this move-I have to say it's ridiculous how large luggage people try to bring on to a plane as "carry-on"-just to save money whereas a more reasonable passengers pay and check in luggage.
