I am quite aware of Cherry, his knowledge of hockey and his popularity with Canadian hockey fans. I've probably been watching him many more years than have you. I was responding to her stupid remark suggesting that I was defending Canada. Apparently everyone else is permitted to have an opinion on the man, but I am not.

It's a bit odd to bring Jimmy Saville into a discussion of iced hockey but, hey ho, Saville has not been convicted of any sexual offence. Don Cherry is a well known supporter of the youth hockey system in Canada; a system which takes boys from their families and has them live in remote towns in the homes of men who want to look after them. Which one is implicated in more bodily intrusions? It aint Jimmy who takes that cherry.

Do you mean him slamming Quebec teams as part of supporting Ontario teams? Regionalism, isn't that what it's called? I only know that bit of him from what I've read this afternoon. Cherry was famous for complaining about Russians/Swedes/Finns/etc, #younameit when he wanted local players but that's bias or prejudice, not racism.
I'd like to see arbitration capping players' salaries and team profits so it's at least a bit believable and the difference go to fund something soft and fuzzy like health care.
