Or... it might just be that US media dominates the world and the CBC et al just lead with whatever leads there, even when the story is in Québec!

I don`t think the PQ are interested in governing the ROC.

I've been to Quebec 3 times for v short visits and apart from the idiot in Tim Hortons they were very nice to us. Even spoke English. Mind you USA Immigration peeps are nice to us too.

As for 'racism' that's rather an outmoded term. It's ethnicity or shared culture.

I think it was mentioned on page 23 of the Calgary Sun just under the Ford dealers advert saying buy a new Ford F150 this weekend and get a free gun rack, stetson and a pair of cowboy boots.

On a Westjet 737 flying out of Calgary I saw (more than once) the flight attendants give the emergency exit and seatbelt lecture in English, then turn on a tape recording of the same procedure in French, turn the volume down so it wouldn't disturb anyone, and set about preparing for takeoff.
Most of us don't give a shit about Ontario more than we don't give a shit about Quebec. It's an equally undeserved bias.

I was under the impression that English, and French was the Canadian language.?

If that happened to me when I was speaking English, I'd reply to them in Parisian French that they don't even speak real French, so they shouldn't even call it French.

I've only ever been to Montreal, but have been there both for business and pleasure and most people seem to have no problem with me speaking english, and this is a slightly RP'd accent, to them. My wife and two of her female friends did have an issue in one restaurant not wanting them to come it <dirty quebec accent> "It iz full, we hav' no space fur youze" ,which was bollocks, as the place was empty. Think it was more to do with them being women than them not speaking french.

I know the odd word of french, but won't use it as I feel rude / silly not being able to converse properly in the language, so I don't bother and just use english.

So, you're suggesting that the Quebecois are both racist and that they're sexist? Not only that, but, while you speak in heavily accented Canadian, they should have perfect pronunciation of English.

Oi vey.

For Windows, the number codes for the upper case letters are:

The last time I was in Montreal I asked some guy, sporting a fleur de lys on his toque, for directions and he immediately replied in French that he would only answer in that language. When I used to live there I often experienced this. While speaking English with a friend in a restaurant on St Denis blvd I was made to feel very uncomfortable until I hushed up. I was refused service in English in a Federal job center as well (supposed to be bilingual). I could go on.

How would you respond if you were in the middle of London and a French person came up to you and started speaking french to you. You would think it a bit cheeky.

My friends on a day trip to France had a similar experience in a bar when they started straight out in english with the staff without even trying to speak the language.

Protocol is either to start out in poor french and let them switch to English or ask them if they speak English before just assuming. try saying "Parlez-vous anglais?" 9 times out of 10 they will try and help you.

Quebec isnt constitutionally a bilingual province anyway is it? I though New Brunswick was the only one.

Re: Quebec Racists

New Brunswick and Canada's three territories have all given official status to more than one language. In the case of New Brunswick, this means perfect equality. In the other cases, the recognition sometimes amounts to a formal recognition of official languages, but limited services in official languages other than English. Manitoba was officially bilingual at its creation, became officially Anglophone only, but this was later reversed by the courts.

Im mandated to offer services in both official languages where I work however when I have rung other CBSA offices in Quebec I am not offered the same

I think that's what pisses most people off (it does me anyway) - that the rest of Canada bends over backwards to provide services in french when requested but it's not reciprocated when dealing with the die hards in Quebec.

The french sign bylaw in Quebec really boggles my mind as well. If someone here in BC opened a business and had a sign in say, Chinese only, you wouldn't get the "language" police around tellling you that you had to have it in English - nobody cares.

It depends which part of Quebec you are in. If you are in a mainly separatist area. They will tell you to f**k off.

Re: Quebec Racists

Funny but true story. Anybody rememeber Eaton's department store.
Well in Quebec they had to drop the apostrophe so the sign read Eaton.

The Office is particularly concerned about the number of companies that have English brand names, but with no generic descriptive included in French.
She refused to single out offenders, but said one acceptable example is the Scores restaurant chain, which was allowed to keep its English brand name by including the descriptive "rotisserie" -- the French term for grill.
Another name deemed acceptable is Les Cafes Second Cup.

1993 -- Bill 86 is passed by Quebec's Liberal government to incorporate changes to Bill 101 mandated by the 1988 Supreme Court decision. The updated bill allows languages other than French to be included on commercial signs, but requires French to be "markedly predominant."

Ah Quebec gotta love it.

Experiences will vary, and to the list of bilingual places might be added parts of northern Ontario. The Scots-Irish-French there speak more French than Scots-Irish.

I doubt this is true. Is the program for the Calgary Stampede available in French? How about the schedule of Roughriders games? Can one rent a room in Fort McMurray in French? How many Chinese restaurants outside Quebec offer their menus in French?

Bad example. Fort McMurray is like that bar in Star Wars where strange-looking creatures from all over the universe congregate to jibber-jabber away in their own tongues. It wouldn't surprise me if it had the highest population/nationality diversity in Canada.

You took that out of context - I was refering to FL's comment about government services. But even if you use your examples; if someone showed up at a Stamp game, could only speak french, they'd try and help them out - they wouldn't tell them to bugger off and come back when you learn english. On the restaurant front, crap, I've been to joints (Indian and Asian) where the menu is in english and I still haven't a clue what I'm ordering and all the staff speak broken english - you just make do, you don't get pissed off and demand the menu be produced in english.

I often think of that scene while I'm having pre-takeoff sedation in the bar at Charles de Gaulle. I've never thought of Shatner though.

There was another year when the iced hockey people went on strike and the season was cancelled, it seems common in American sports as the same thing happened with baseball. It was much nicer without the iced hockey. That commentator guy, Don Cheery is like a Canadian Noddy Holder, always dressed in suits made out of cloth for golf clothes, we don't need to see that.
