Phones Again
#1
I have a Blackberry phone on the Bell network. In the coming weeks it'll no longer be supported by, well, by anyone really.
I use:
Often
- email feeds from various sources
- international phone calls (the one person I speak to by phone is in the UK)
- WhatsApp
- the alarm clock
- the camera
Sometimes
- the navigation thingy
- the weather forecast
- the browser
The feature I like least about the Blackberry is that, when it's not in use, it slides around in my pocket and random features are invoked or numbers dialed. That's especially a pita when it phones Tokyo or 911. I want a phone with a lockable display.
Phones are not fun so I don't want to spend much on a new one.
Suggestions?

You can get a fairly decent Android phone that meets your requirements for under $100 now. It would mean you learning to use the Android OS.

I'm an Apple lover myself, but buying one new on a non contract is expensive.

I went from Blackberry to Motorola X 2nd Gen. It's an android. I have three email accounts on there. Use Whatsapp. Take photos, All of the things you want but there's a newer version out now which probably does all those things but you never know.
The things I dislike about it are that you can't rename photos from their original file name, the only way to record audio is to take a video. The screen lock button is in a daft place so when you hand your phone to someone to show them a photo or whatever they stick their pudgy fingers on it and blank the screen.
Sound quality is good enough for me to be able to make voice calls and hear quite well on videos.

Get a Samsung on Android and you can feel superior and smug to all Apple users because you're being a rebel and not buying from a Corporate monolith........ Oh wait

It's just a minimalist Unix, isn't it? I can use vi, I hope I'd be able to work an Android phone. More than that, I hope a user appliance like that doesn't take much learning.

I like my Nexus.
Had the Nexus 5
Now got the Nexus 6p
Like it because it's true android without a manufacturer wrapper over it
Very customizable if you want. But works just fine without a lot of faffing
Battery life wasn't fantastic on the 5. But I suspect you won't be using a lot of high drain functions. Like web browsing and watching videos

I don't particularly LIKE my iPhone, but I've become used to it, although the initial learning curve was a PITA.
It does all you mention in the OP.
I'm on my 3rd iPhone (first was work imposed), mainly because I got really good deals/free upgrades after the 1st one, but also because once I got used to it, I really couldn't face learning how to use/navigate a different phone/system.

To the OP, I would recommend a minimum of 16GB storage if you buy an iPhone. The latest iOS requires at least 4GB, that gives you some room for a GPS app and whatsapp attachments etc.

A long while ago, when I lived in a condo building, a group of gangsters from Montreal bought a floor of the building. It was summer and they sat on the patio at the Yard most afternoons betting on rickshaw races and sending exotic drinks to people who didn't expect them. The one I knew best was called Franco, he was some sort of enforcer. It was obvious when he'd had a bad day of people kicking because he'd order Cinquante.
One day I was at the bar when he came in limping and bleeding, "Cinquante" he snapped at the bartender. "Rough day?" I asked and he explained that it had all gone wrong, people had hit him with things and they'd tried to smash his phone. They'd failed. "In my business, Motorola". I was surprised not to see him in posters on bus shelters.

We use Blackberry's, DTEK60 or 50. Not sure of the price. Very good Android phones although not waterproof.

What about a Motorola Moto G?
I've had a couple. I like Motorolas.
The latest one I bought off Amazon.co.uk and it came from India to Canada in about 2 days by DHL. There was a very small amount of duty to pay but it was still a good deal. I wanted a dual sim version so had to hunt around for a bit.
