If they didnt bother with those costly enquires into fatal crashes it would probably be cheaper overall if more people die in accidents ,rather than paying to patch them up in hospital afterwards:p No need to treat the dead, and the overall quality of the gene pool would improve too:)

If you are to be totally distraction free, you would have to be in a car alone, no radio, CD, Sat Nav; so each person would have a vehicle of their own.

As a biker this wouldnt upset me as I'm fed up trying to avoid ciggy butts thrown out of car windows. :curse:

A friend had a lit ciggy butt lodge against his neck and had to quickly cross from lane 3 on the M6 to the hard shoulder while it burnt through to his skin :eek:

As a self-righteous ex-smoker I rejoiced when it said on the radio today that the age for buying cigs has gone up to 18 :thumbsup:

I was buying them aged 11 onwards... will it really change anything?

I was only ever refused once in the UK when I was 14. I remember it well, just come out of an O Grade exam and was furious the shopkeeper didn't believe I was 16 when I showed him my exam paper :o

I smoke, I smoke in my car, and I am going to carry on doing that.....

I get everyone's point about lack of distractions etc, but what is everyone going to do drive from A to B without removing hands from the steering wheel?

We all do things behind the wheel that could cause distraction. :o

Wind down window
Turn volume up/down CD
Pick nose (not me, always they guy behind)
Shout at kids/practise times tables
Talk
Sneeze (scary that one! Thats what they should ban... No driving if you have a cold or hayfever).

What will they stop next??

I have children so I do not smoke in the house, my only refuge is the car! (not when children are in the car).

I smoke with the window down (whatever the weather). I leave a couple of cigarettes out of the packet, with a lighter. I have an ashtray right by the steering wheel that you just drop the cigarette into, no need to stub out! Where is the problem with this? Personally I think they should crack down on people using mobile phones, not the smokers!

Each to their own, you can smoke in the car and be safe you just have to sensible...

I'm an ex (chain) smoker of the worst kind (trust me, you'd hate to be near me with a cigarette!)and I'm not sure of the intent of this new ban, but surely it all comes down to common sense? If you want to smoke in your own car, I don't see a problem with that. The issue of distraction is a non-issue when you consider all the other things people do in their cars. You can't legislate against everything. But, if you smoke with children in the car, then that's child abuse and flogging is too good, as far as I'm concerned. Maybe this is the true intent of the suggested ban? There must be more to it than the OP has stated. I know they are considering making it an offence to smoke in a car with children in it, here in BC, and that's a no-brainer. But if it's as cut and dried as the OP says, blimey they'd have to start banning drinking coffee (there go all the Tim's and Starbucks drive-thrus!) and listening to music, etc etc. There's got to be more to it than just an outright ban on smoking in the car.

Chances are in Canada that the road is dead straight,, you probably have the cruise control on, and the road is wide enough that even if you do swerve around a bit looking for the sour cream glazed timbits in the bottom of the box that you wont hit anything anyway;)

SO TRUE and one of the reasons were are trying to escape the UK - the congestion on the roads and its equivalent road rage :curse:are far worse than any smoking issues. But true to form the UK government dont tackle any of the real issues. :ohmy:
