And remove CD players as you may be out of control of your vehicle if you change the CD !?!?!?
Surely the offense would be not being in control of your vehicle IF you are not in control of your vehicle. Otherwise all distracting elements in the car ( fiddling with a/c, radio, CD, CHILD, putting gum in your mouth ) should be banned in the same way as a cigarette. It shouldn't be the cigarette which is banned but the offender who is not in control of the vehicle based on the observed irratic driving behaviour. |

As a cyclist I'd love to see more enforcement of this kind of thing in Canada; particularly with regard to cell phones. |

Oh no, have the NDP moved over there now?
I had a giggle with an old buffer at the Amberley Working Museum in Sussex last year. He was in the tool shop, demonstrating a range of old machines (lathes etc). One machine, a big drill press, wasn't operating. The H&S tit had visited and obviously banned something for the sake of appearances. He picked probably the least dangerous bit of kit in the place. |
Re: No smoking in your car!!!!!
I don't know what I think about this. On the one hand I hate to see the government making rules about anything and everything - usually everything. But on the other hand I sometimes think you have to protect people against their own stupidity.
I have heard talk in Canada about banning smoking in cars when there are children in the car. However, if you are going to do that - then I can tell you I got in used car for sale once and I just about gagged!! They had apparently cleaned and cleaned it but it stunk like a filthy ash tray. So I doubt whether it would do any good simply banning smoking when the kid was in the car because the whole place would be full of smoking anyway! My granddaughter has a friend whose mother smokes in the house. I used to pick this girl up all the time when I drove my granddaughter to school. Sometimes I had to open the window even when it was 30 below because I couldn't breathe because of the smoke smell coming off that kid's clothes! Of course there were the few weeks she didn't go to school because she had coughs or colds or was visiting the specialist for her asthma!!!!!!!!!!! |

I think most of these things are covered by "driving without due care and attention". You should get a passenger to do these things or wait until you can stop the car. I seem to remember there was a hilarious fuss in the UK a while back about a woman who was prosecuted for eating an apple whilst driving. I don't have a problem with that.

I agree it is covered by that, and of course always have that passenger in the car to change the radio, CD, heating level etc etc ;)

Re: No smoking in your car!!!!!
So, odly enough, I have just got back from the school run and no word of a lie a chap turned in front of me at a really bad junction with a chocolate bar in one hand, a ciggy in the other and his mobile between his shoulder and his ear.
Just what was he steering with??? |

Personally, I find the most distractions in a car come from the CHILDREN :p How could that be regulated? How do you stop boys of 3 & 5 bickering, moaning, crying, shouting, laughing hysterically etc.??????? Hubby is a smoker but banned from smoking in the house or car coz kids have asthma! Poor man is a present outside having his fag! (I have to admit to putting make-up at traffic lights when in a rush:o) |
Re: No smoking in your car!!!!!
Didn't think anyone was trying to stop anyone smoking in their cars.....just trying to stop them driving at the same time.
