Re: No smoking in your car!!!!!

How bad will the smokers driving become once they are made to go cold turkey in the car, and get all irratable and twitchy and short tempered after not having a puff for a while?

Its probably safer to just let them keep poisoning themselves isnt it?

OK so if they are stopping you from smoking in your car because
"it will distract you from driving"

Then lets stop kids from getting in the car, they distract you more
Then stop the in-laws in the car "they really annoy me"
Then stop pets going in the car

They have just jumped on the band waggon as far as we are concerned, hubby just told me, he heard it on the radio as well this morning.

But then britain is political correctness gone wrong :curse::curse:

Admittedly I only ever smoked as a learner driver, not alone in a car... but it is quite difficult to get your fag out of the packet, get it lit, flick it out the window and make sure you get the ash at the right spot on the window so that it doesn't blow straight back in. And then dodge the little sparky bits of fag that fall. And turn your head to blow smoke out the window so that your accompanying driver can breathe a little. And then the final "will my fag fly into the back seat and set the carpet on fire" flick out the window.

I can choose a playlist on my iPod by touch, never have to look down.

Or, as I said wait until you come to a stop. If it's something that just requires flicking a switch or quickly turning a dial, then you can probably do it while driving. More than that, and if you need to look away from the road, then you're going to be potentially dangerous.

I'm co-ordinated enough to know where my hand and mouth are. People who aren't surely shouldn't be driving in the first place.

Try this one. Pretend you are going to stub out in the car's ashtray (probably by the shift lever). Do so and then see if you need to correct your steering.

Actually, truth be told, I don't smoke in the car because a. it stinks up the leather and coats the air con pipes and b. my daughter is usually in the car which a no-no anyway.

I was just playing devil's advocate.

 To me lighting a fag took the same time and distraction as changing gear in the car. It's just pick on smokers time in the UK, they are the scum of the earth.

I'll just sit back and watch all the dogooder's (?sp) start kicking off about increased taxes or laugh when they start saying you can't drink beer in pubs in case it upsets the non drinker 10 miles away:sneaky:.

All this big brother makes me want to start smoking again just to drive around puffing my head off:o, but I won't.

Oh please. If people are going to insist on regurgitating tabloid catch-phrases at least use the right ones. Big Brother is used to refer to the increased amounts of surveillance we're under. Read 1984 if you haven't already. The epithet you're grasping for is "Nanny State".

Although there wouldn't be a need for a nanny state if people weren't so ****ing stupid. Can you believe they had to legislate to make people wear seat-belts?

An intersting point in this context.

Who is more likely to hurt an innocent bystander, someone driving along without a seatbelt, or someone losing control while trying to light a fag and turn left at the same time?

Frankly as an adult if Im doing something of my own freewill, and Im aware of the risks and I'm not harming anyone else, what business is it of the governments what I choose to do.

In that respect no smoking in the car legislation makes more sense than seatbelt legislation, but of course the existing "driving without due care and attention" legislation should be enough to cover smoking, cell phones, Ipods, blowjobs or any other thing that is distracting a driver from job #1 driving a car.

The whole thing smacks of hypocracy, its really just a further attempt to disenfranchise smokers. Smoking has been known to be dangerous to health for decades, but they cant ban it entirely as they would lose the tax revenue it generates and supplies would go black market and just a many people would still smoke anyway, so they are just making it harder to do any way they can.

What about all the money it costs to scrape your entrails off the road and cart your wrecked car off to the tip?
