I really am more suited to palm trees.
We have one in our garden in France, but the weather isn't great there in winter. We're off to Naples for Christmas.

Sounds like a good plan. I have been looking at spending Christmas in the sun, but I don’t think it will happen this year. I have a cruise from Dubai to HK to look forward to.

I always find the contrast is illustrated nicely when I can get up on a Saturday morning, retrieve the newspaper from the mailbox without having to step outside, but looking out and seeing snowbanks as high as cars and - near the end of winter - I can see the chest high snow that runs almost the length of the drive beyond the back of the house, all the way to the front of the house.

I go into the kitchen and through the window see 3 or 4 feet of snow on the deck and put my breakfast on.

With bacon sandwich or toast and coffee I then sit down in front the TV for the 8.30 match from England and not a snowflake to be seen.

Lovely.

The last few days have been nice, was nice this morning but clouds are coming in now, Still now snow on the north shore mountains.

9 degrees or so outside, window has to be open or the apartment gets 22-24 if closed and that is too warm for me.

Biggest problem I have with winter is the short days, sunset is 4:25pm today but its only going to get worse as we head into December, makes the evening feel so long.

Not much worse though, almost on the rebound. Do you have your SAD lamp yet?

This morning I knew it was windy as there was no power. I know from day-to-day comparisons that rural Iraq and central Bangui C.A.R. have more reliable power than we do. We have a generator, of course, but I went without coffee rather than start it. It was snowing quite heavily, wet snow. The street was covered in sheet ice, this was a bother when I fell and again when the poor dog was unable to scrabble enough grip to crap.

The drive was wintry, two of three miles of not being able to see forward at all, using the poles to centre the car on the road, followed by one lane having impassibly heaped snow and so having to drive in the other. I don’t like to do that as, technically, each lane should contain vehicles going in one direction and there’s a danger of collision. It’s particularly problematic on windy days as the nearby highway is closed and the heavy vehicles use the road I take. Two people close to me have spun off the road so far this winter. Fortunately, both were driving 4x4s and so were able to get back on to the road without having to encounter the police and be fined for their mishaps. This morning, on a sweeping snow covered curve, I felt the tail go out but didn’t lose it.

-17 tonight or -20, people in the lift wondered to each other. I thought that it’s inevitable that I will eventually be killed driving to or from work, I hope it’s not the day after a cold snap.

We have a new hairstyle on the deck!

We have spherical caps on our deck posts and when they get snowed on they remind me of Queen Victoria. But sometimes they look a bit like something else, depending on the kind of snow. We've had a mohican style and whatever it's called when it's just on top.

But today we have a series of Afros. It's like having The Jackson 5 on the deck, but white of course.

Thank you for the thought. Fortunately, Ms. I Heart Winter is late this morning, perhaps stuck in the snow. I'm not braced for "isn't it so wonderfully cold" quite yet.
