I liked the fact you could walk around our Capital city and see people of every colour, creed, costume and nationality.
What's changed (for me) is that I no longer feel that people who work hard and contribute to society get rewarded. Except the very rich. I feel like the government DOES give hand outs to 'economic immigrants' who come here on a promise to get money for nothing and sit in paid-for houses while people like myself, and most of my friends, are being bled dry by high house prices, vast council taxes, and utility bills shooting through the roof.
We have enough people who were BORN here taking advantage of this 'the world owes me a living' benefit system, and I object to people who blatantly see UK as an easy ride. Of course, I have no problem with (for example) Polish and other European immigrants coming here legally and really wanting to work hard...it's the people who do nowt and get everything paid for that p1$$ me off.
Britain is losing it's balls, it's culture and it's work ethic and being swamped by a tide of people who want to move out and start again somewhere better (like Canada)

... and Aus and NZ. Spot-on post, that. That's one of the ( minor ) reasons why we are headed to Aus - the massive influx of freeloaders, who bring no skills* here and, as you say, just get everything for nothing. The unemployment rates in Oldham are huge amongst sections of the population, there is a huge number of people who don't speak English ( and why should they don't have to go out to work and even the council print all literature in about 20 languages ? ), etc, etc, etc, etc.
It seems that Britain lets ANYONE in the country and houses them, feeds them, educates their children, looks after their health, pays them disability benefit and provides free cars ( Abu Hamza and Sheikh Omar Bakri Mohammed ) even if they are known social agitators who won't work and bring nothing to the country but unrest and the threat of terror. WTF ???
At least with Aus you have to be useful to their economy and work to pay your way. Probably the same with Canada.
I also agree with your comments about the Poles. We have several who work in my building. They learn English, they work hard, they are friendly, they pay their taxes and they don't cause any trouble or social unrest.
Rant over.
* I'm talking about those that don't bring skills, not those that do !

I was offered this by my doctor because I had a serious knee injury when i played football at the dripping pan.
I never took up the offer as i didn't want the 'disabled' tag as this could have limited my career although i believe it is a very good scheme if you have a serious injury and need to get to a place called work. unemployed people shouldn't get it unless they are disabled to the point they can not work.

Same goes for any immigrants...again, I was friends with some girls whos family originated from Bangladesh (again, parents came over in 1950s) and they were lovely too. All the family were kind and welcoming, most of them worked, the girls' late father set up his own business and the girls and their brother all had good jobs. They all considered themselves British, they all had what I'd call the British work ethic (as it used to be) and there was none of this 'I'll speak a foreign language and you have to adapt to me' with them, they were all bilingual too and brought their kids up the same way.
One of them had a lad with learning difficulties and instead of sitting and bleating about the education system or the NHS she got in there and worked with the authorities to help him (and others with his problem) - she made damn sure her son wasn't going to grow up a drop out with no education and even wrote a book on the disorder, especially targetted at her ethnic community because they weren't so familiar with learning difficulties and frowned on him as being 'badly behaved'.
These are the sort of immigrants that all counties want and need. I have absolutely no problems with anyone who wants to come to the country and make a living. That's what we all want, and that's the reason I want to go to Canada, to work hard and make a better life for myself.
People who have 17 kids and complain that their house isn't big enough any more (no? SHOCKER) and people who arrive here with their hands out and a dopey 'please look after me' look on their face are just a waste of our resources. And it's people like that who are making people like me, who work for a living but just see it all disappearing to pay for scroungers to get better houses on the social, want to move.
And don't get me started on disability either. Yes, some people ARE severely disabled and need support. But the scroungers that milk the system grate on me...having seen a friend with MS refused Disability Living Allowance because the Benefits Agency couldn't quite grasp the fact that MS comes and goes. I could have gone for incapacity benefit myself having developed RSI 3 years ago and for a while being unable to write or do much at all...but I was determined to beat it, and get back to work again. Now I'm working full time AND running a magazine website where I write most of the features myself...but the doctors told me I would be lucky to get back to work again three years ago!
I just want to go somewhere where a can-do attitude actually gets you somewhere...
<edited for rubbish typing...I blame the RSI
)

The worst offenders i have seen are either workmen in large white vans with ladders on the roof and company slogans on the side(clearly not disabled) or groups of youths in small sporty hatchback with music blaring out, not a blue badge in sight!

I can't see Abu Hamza really having much use for a Porsche. Must be a bugger to park when you've got no hands and only one eye.
