London Riots
#48
There have always been gangs in large cities but they didn't run riot.
I left school at the age of 14 in 1944 and there were jobs of all descriptions for young people plus at the age of 18 you had to spend 2 years in the military.
I was able to climb the job ladder due to taking evening classes and the excellent training I received in electronics in the RAF. I was in continuos employment for 48 years and only had one week unemployed.
I feel sorry for todays youth the deck is stacked against them especially young men.

I'm not suggesting you are making excuses for them, but that is what such sentiments sound like. "I ain't got nothing else to do but riot, rape, pillage etc. What's the world done for me?"

One wonders why the papers never mention people looting small or medium screen televisions. It would seem much more practical to walk home with a more compact model and, anyway, in the relatively small living rooms of the UK, large television screens tend to look vulgar. Were I caught up in a riot, I think I'd look for something in the 22 to 24" range.
Your kids would get T-shirts made up saying...
"My Dad went out looting, and all I got was this lousy 22 inch LCD TV"

It's quite obvious to me that this is linked to the record levels of youth unemployment in the UK. When people have no purpose if life they do stuff like this.

Does anyone notice a correlation between the chart rise of Cher Lloyd’s Swagger Jagger and the onset of the rioting? Existence has become meaningless and absurd to kids these days.

If I were paranoid, I might think that this is all a naughty little MI5-triggered stunt to enable the government to force through draconian public order legislation ahead of soon-to-come civil unrest at job losses/budget cuts or even the Olympics.
Police state here we come...
I think I'll set fire to the camp tonight and loot the vending machine for Twixes. Solidarnosc!

Put them on the front line in Afghanistan. Then when half of them make it back they'll appreciate the free and safe society London was once known for whether you were rich or poor, had a job or not.
