So I guess I am saying that it all depends on your own personal experience and perspective.

I have to agree there. There are several discussion groups out there (travel or specific location related) that regularly descend into rascist rants or just plain foul languaged slanging matches. This well-moderated (yeah, it's called sucking up :D ) group is the height of civility and tolerance in comparison.

I've been around here for a while, and I've used the internet since before it was widely available to the public. Sometimes, the information you find is contradictory, even from what seem to be kosher sources. Webpages often get moved rather than updated but the old ones stay out in the virtual world. Sometimes you just use the wrong search terms (often enough I've looked for a previous post that I know exists but it takes several attempts to hit it). Sometimes you just want somebody to say "don't worry, I've been there before and survived" but can't think of a "good" question to start the ball rolling.

If somebody really upsets you, use the ignore button. I have never got round to using it (though it has been tempting at times) as those that have been rude to me (in my opinion) have generally posted useful information elsewhere. Grow a thick skin (sarcasm can be quite entertaining to onlookers), be nice to other people, don't worry when people are not responding (it is not personal - they are not deliberately "dissing" you) and learn when to say sorry. It is amazing how much human interactions depend on body posture and facial expressions - not always possible to pick these up through a written medium.

Oh, and don't stress about how other people choose to advertise sending/receiving karma, messages etc. In the big scheme of things, there is more to worry about, even in the virtual world.

I think everyone is just trying to get along and be as helpful as they can but sometimes, as in real life, people get up other's noses and it's just a matter of how you choose to deal with it.

One of the biggest problems in any written communication is that things sometimes get lost in translation - not just because the written word loses much of the emphasis that the voice and face bring to a conversation but also humour and, particularly the great British pastime of covert wit and comedy sarcasm or saucy remarks (and I do mean the genuinely funny, what makes us British humour type) can also be lost, which is a real shame (did I really say saucy? - how very 'Carry On' of me....ooooh matron!).

This doesn't happen a lot but I have noticed that it has caused a couple of problems here when someone has misread a completely innocent remark made in one of these ways.

Personally speaking I am soooo glad I found this site as it has been a great place to get advice (sometimes give some when I can) and the majority of people I have come across have been great so beers all round   :) :)

I have two problems with the ignore button.

One is my own silly fault : I let my curiosity get the better of me, and take it off so I can see what "they've" written since I started ignoring them. (*slaps head*) :p

The other is more general, and that is the habit people have of replying with a quote (usually unecessary) which has my "ignoree's" rude/stupid/outrageous postings in full! so I think "why did I bother???"

If I posted a thread and someone responded "Do a search as this has been answered many time before" I would think.....wow abrupt!!!!

I didn't actually think your reply to that was that was bad. I was not necessarily referring to your posts. I hope you have not taken anything that I have said in the wrong vein. Sorry if I caused any offence. :)
