iirc she recovered and grew up to be an American. (Not that this detracts from the horror of the picture)

The horror, and indeed the iconic status. She grew up to be a Canadian, actually (eventually). Kim Phuc moved from Vietnam to Cuba in the mid 1980s, got married to another Vietnamese expat, honeymooned in Moscow, and on her way back to Cuba, during a refuelling stopover at Gander, Nfld, she and her husband sought political asylum. They now live in Ajax, ON, with their two chlidren.

touché. I thought she was American now, too, but Wikipedia said otherwise so I looked up the rest of her story. I hadn't realised that the whole incident was Vietnamese-on-Vietnamese, with absolutely no American involvement - it was later US anti-war protesters who insinuated that it was a US bombing raid that had napalmed the village in the first place. Nor that Nick Ut, the photographer, used his own transport to take her and her family to hospital and insist she was treated despite the triage staff writing her off as a hopeless case. They're still in regular contact.
