I saw a Wolf and it was massive!

Hi everyone,
This was my first experience of seeing Canadian wildlife, after setting off towards MB for a recce trip. We set off from a place called Dryden early in the morning and saw this great big thing just plodding across the road. It was gigantic and considering the images of wolves that I've had before thinking they were dog size but this thing was huge. I swear it was 5 foot! in fact, when we first saw it we were like 'what the heck was that' because we thought they were only dog size. It was also on its own which makes me think it could have been kicked out of the pack.
Has anyone else seen these before - I'd love to hear more about them and feel quite humbled that I got to see him. I looked it up on the net and it appears to be a Timber wolf.

I've seen wolves here - wild, in a sanctuary at Haliburton, and in a zoo in London and they aren't huge, a big dog size but 5 foot? Or do you mean length?

We saw a pair of wolves crossing the road in Kananaskis Country (Rockies)
They were unmistakably wolves ... I've seen many coyotes and these were much bigger and thicker-set. Impressive indeed!

Thanks Sonofcanadian,
Yeah, I do feel lucky and blessed to have seen it. Someones just told me that it could have been a subspecies and that they are big.
If you ever get the chance to do the drive we did up through Northern Ontario and across to MB then go for it. The scenery was stunning, driving through little villages of cottages and dipping hills with forests. We saw Lake Huron and Lake Superior, truly breathtaking.

The one we saw the other day was big dog sized... as you say, not 5 foot, but def the size of a large Alsatian or similar.

Seems most coyotes/ wolves are hybrids but when you see a wolf you know it's not a coyote, if you see what I mean.

Hi again,
The wolves that you see around Peterborough On may well be the size of dogs however, where we saw the gigantic one and yes, around 5 foot tall too was a 23 hour drive north west from Peterborough On, so well away from big towns and populated areas.
Just because we are told that an animal (dog/wolf/horse/moose etc,) should be a certain height/weight/characteristic etc, doesn't always mean that every single animal in the world is going to be that way.

A 5 foot high wolf would be a giant fearsome creature and would weight about 400 pounds (well maybe not that much) . I don't think even the Dire Wolves of the ice age got anywhere near that size, let alone todays Grey Wolves.
According to wiki, the biggest ones ever caught weighed less than 200 pounds. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gray_Wolf

Hi
Just to add my five penny'orth to the discussion. I think that in all breeds there is a potential for abnormal growth and take for example the creatures like squid and Octopi.....there are normal sized ones and GIANT sized ones. Greentea was very lucky to have seen a larger than normal specimen and I envy her that experience.
Just because a lot of people have seen 'normal' sized ones, does not mean that the OP has exaggerated, it was a truly unique experience for her and her comments should be treated with respect, as that was her experience.
I would not for a minute question what someone had or hadn't seen, just because I had never seen one that size. I say Lucky Greentea and thanks for sharing.
lol

I thought of this thread whilst driving though Leeds city centre tonight & seeing 4 bunnies on an urban road island - cute as they were, they weren't a wolf!
