Do you have the same concerns as me and my wife i.e. Schools, Yobs, crime, general incivility. We are doing our best to protect our daughter from it all, but can't help but the feel is doing everything it can to drag her into it!
Indeed - the general lifestyle / parenting or lack of it here - we are not far from Brixton etc . . .can be v unpleasant!

Spot on; you are so preaching to the converted!

I don't want to sound like a smug/pefect parent. but me and my wife work very hard at doing what's right for our daughter; we insist on good manners, she doesn't get anything unless she uses the words 'please' and 'thank you'. We also insist on 'sorry' 'pardon me' and 'excuse me'.

We don't plonk her in front of the TV all day or let her watch inappropriate stuff. Paddys and tantrums earn her a trip to her room, she goes to bed at reasonalbe time.

The number of 'decent' parents who let their kids watch DVD's with an 18 tag or let their children, who are no older than ours stay up to 9 or 10 at night is frightening.

Parenting skills, like everything else in the UK have gone down the pan.

That pretty much sums up my approach too and I have to laugh when my sister calls me a hard ass As far as I'm concerned it just common sense. Of course it's easy now as they're not teenagers

Indeed Hawkman - My 13 yr old was having a hissy fit because I wouldnt let her take the Russel Brand DVd to her friends for a sleep over (its an 18).

She was saying - oh well I've seen so and so and so and so's house - to which I was saying - thats very nice dear, but you havent stayed at Ellies before, I havent watched the dvd so have no idea how "18" it is, although if its like the jimmy carr one there is no way she would be watching it and that I didnt want her taking something unsuitable to some one elses house!

she came back saying he had watched the grudge and The grudge 2 and then had to be escorted up to bed last night as she was too scared to go on her own!

Obviously that was my fault as she woulnt have had to watch an 18 horror if I had let her watch an 18 comedy!!!!!!

school tomorrow - thank goodness

I agree 100%. North America has the highest rate of teenage births in the developed world. Funny that.

I do hear my mother when I am arguiung with my daughter and have had some awful deja vu experiencs, but as my mum and I discuse, it wasnt til I was 15 or more that I started wanting to hang out and got o parties etc with "boys", its all so much younger now!! and if they go out in groups its guilt by association

one of her friends from primary is no at a rough secondary and she still meets up with her - the friend has been caught a few times for shop lifting - -

I have told daughter hat if the frienbd ever did that with her around or if she was sooo stupid as to attempt it herself and was caught I would not be dashing down to the police station to get her - i would go in my own good time and let her stew!

harsh mother me!

Oh god - I made sure she was so totally well versed on all aspecyts of biology from when she was quite young - when I was preganant with her brother she was 3 - expalined it all - so when she actually started the dreaded periods I made it abundantly clear that I did not want to become a young grand mother - actually she's not that keen on boys yet - still very much animals -actually is that wrong????

In additon my wife would need to sit the Canadian nursing exam before she could nurse out there and then have to register with the relevant nursing body in Alberta or wherever.

So we would have to spend time, money and effort. We really need to made our made up good and proper before we do anything. Still thanks for the suggestion.
Actually, she doesn't need to pass her exam first. She can get temporary registration by getting her training transcripts approved which can take as little as 6 weeks (but is variable). If she then gets a job offer you could be there in 6 months or less. She then has a year to pass the exam.

Good to see we agree.

Children need boundries and rules, otherwise they'll grow up with no self-respect or respect for anyone or anything.

We met some of our daughter's friends parents at a Birthday party recently their child is 3 too.

They let him watch the film 'Gladiator' you know the one with people having their heads chopped of and blood splatter up the screen. Not appropriate for a 3 year old. Guess what he had nightmares, and his parents thought it was funny!

A colleage of mine, another 'decent' parent bought her 7 year old a game for his playstation 'Grand Theft Auto' it involes stealing cars, shooting policemen, and in her words 'getting jiggy with a prostitutes' not to mention the characters string of regular expletives.

'Aren't you concerned?'I asked naively. 'No' came the reply 'as long as he turns down the volume and I can't hear it, it's okay'.

Call me old fashioned! please call me old fashioned.

No doubt when she has a teenage yob on her mind she'll ask 'Where did I go wrong?'

I totally agree, but don't the kids think that they are hard done by when they are the only 7/8/9 year old in the class who is not allowed to stay up to watch CSI.

No, that's sweet. Expect it to change, most of the young girls are well into boys (some literally) by the time they are twelve in my neck of the woods.

Hi destionation,

Yes we know that, but thanks for the posting.

My wife doesn't want that kind of pressure on her. New job, new country, new home, child in new school, hubby with no job yet, and no friends yet either. On top of all that she has to pass an exam.

We would really want all that done and dusted before we do out there, but cheers for the info.

Actually I agree. I have done it that way but I think I am in the minority. I applied for temp reg March 07, got temp reg in May 07, given opportunity to sit exam in June but decided to do it in October. Passed and got a job offer and now just waiting for WP to come through. We haven't sold our UK house yet but are moving out in August either way.
