Hurricane Bill is heading towards Nova Scotia at the moment, and has just been upgraded to a category 4, due to reach here around Sunday (the day we'd booked a whale watching trip in the Bay of Fundy
)
I know there are quite a few newcomers in NS at the moment who probably haven't experienced storms like this here. It's hard to tell how much damage will be done, if any, but it is a good idea to stock up now on essentials like water, candles etc. just incase we loose power - they said on the radio this morning be prepared for 72 hours without services.

Spare a thought for us in NB too.
We are going to be battening down the hatches.
I wasn't expecting having to get the horses in due to storms for quite some time yet, but it looks like they will be in Sunday night.
This summer has been so bad I am almost looking foreward to winter.......remember I said almost.

Same here yesterday - no water left in most of the stores - argh! And now I have just found the kids and their friends playing with my flashlights...lol very useful for when the power goes off and they have no battery power left!

At the moment they're predicting it'll hit east coast NS from Canso up to Sydney and Glace Bay as a category 1 very late on Sunday night, then onto Newfoundland, still as a category 1 (St. John's is directly in it's current path
)
They say the rest of NS and parts of PEI will see winds 40-60mph depending on proximity to the storm. NB looks like it's in the clear.
"Category One Hurricane:
Sustained winds 74-95 mph (64-82 kt or 119-153 km/hr). Damaging winds are expected. Some damage to building structures could occur, primarily to unanchored mobile homes (mainly pre-1994 construction). Some damage is likely to poorly constructed signs. Loose outdoor items will become projectiles, causing additional damage. Persons struck by windborne debris risk injury and possible death. Numerous large branches of healthy trees will snap. Some trees will be uprooted, especially where the ground is saturated. Many areas will experience power outages with some downed power poles. Hurricane Cindy (pdf) (2005, 75 mph winds at landfall in Louisiana) and Hurricane Gaston (2004, 75 mph winds at landfall in South Carolina) are examples of Category One hurricanes at landfall."

As part of an emergency kit get yourselves some crank up LED flashlights. You can get them at Canadian Tire, Walmart and many other places for about $8 or less I have a couple that you can plug a cel phone into and generate enough juice to make a call if your battery quits. A clockwork radio is also useful and cheap to buy. Also, for those who are newcomers and on wells, remember that no power = no water. Fill your bathtubs before the storm hits. That way you will have a means to flush the loo with a bailer and water to boil on a camp stove.

still a category 2 and heading for Halifax
just got phone call from company we were supposed to be going whale watching with today to say they've cancelled all trips for next few days.
ferry from Yarmouth to Maine cancelled tomorrow too
foggy here in Halifax at the moment and not much wind - calm before the storm me thinks

Glad we have a side burner on our bbq so even we lose power for a long period of time we can still boil water and heat up food. Our bbq is hooked up to our main propane tank so we have plenty to last.
Hopefully it will downgrade but best be prepared. Ask anyone around here about Hurricane Juan back in 2003

Might be knocking on your door if we end up with no power!

Up until this morning I wasn't all that bothered about it, assuming it was going to continue to track further south. Then I checked the track this morning, just after I got up around 6:30ish... and saw that it's now tracking north again and they think the hurricane cat 1 force winds are going to be really close to Halifax now.
Not that I'm one to panic, but I was soon out of the door and heading to superstore for supplies, the gas station for a fill up and I've spent the last hour or so putting outside stuff away and tying things down.
They finally put the hurricane and tropical storm warnings online http://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/warnings/warnings_e.html
Bill can be tracked here.

Sunny, hot and very humid up here. Got ourselves organised with candles, water, food, cell phones charged up, radios, cars filled with fuel, cash from bank etc. Making room in the garage for my car and putting away deck furniture, hanging baskets etc.

Very windy here this morning, definitely much cooler and not as sunny as the rest of the week. Watching lightening NB way last night for a bit. Got petrol ready for the generator if needed plus stocked up on batteries, candles, and will be filling the bath up tomorrow just in case
