On holiday in Zakynthos, on the morning of my birthday, thunder and lightening outside, he went down on one knee, didn't expect it at all. Got married in the Dominican Republic, no family with us.

Hubbie proposed on the same beach we'd had our first kiss on exactly a year before. It was just going dark and we were messing about and when i turned around he was down on one knee with the ring. He had managed to pack a half bottle of champagne and some glasses into the camera bag without me noticing, so we (well, me he was driving) sat on the beach drinking champers!!

Funniest thing was, as we had come down from the hotel room that night we had passed a bride crying on the stairs. My hubbie asked if she was ok and if she needed anything. Little did I know he was about to propose, he said after he nearly didn't in case it was a bad omen.

RE. marriage proposal.....I told the Mrs that we were going to stay in London for the weekend (we lived in Essex so it wasn't far) and we checked into a swanky hotel on the Friday night. When she enquired what this was all about, I got down on one knee in the hotel room and told her that I wanted to take her to Hatton Garden and buy her a ring. She cried. We were up the next morning at sparrows fart to find that the diamond shops don't open til 10!

It was well-romantic for us. We'd gone to a notary to get new wills drawn up.

Notary: 'you realise that your common law status isn't that watertight, don't you?'

Me: 'do you marry people?'

Notary: 'yes; piece of piss'

Me: 'well?'

Her: 'OK'

<OK. That's not exactly how it went but it's not far off. The actual proposal came a few days later. I was on my knees anyway, fitting baseboards, so I killed two birds with one stone.>

I'd been told (by him) for a couple of years how he didn't believe in marriage, didn't agree with wedding rings (sign of possession) and so on....

We'd lived together for a couple of years and had just ordered a new kitchen from a salesman that had been around for hours. Lying in bed later that night, he said "I guess if we're spending that much money on a kitchen, we ought to get married".

I was so shocked, my reply was "put the light on and ask me again so I can see your lips moving and know you're really awake!"

Apparently, he reckons he'd asked a few times before but I never believed him and laughed it off (don't remember this bit!).

That was 14 years ago - still trying to work out if he's awake!!

In a crowded room at a houseparty in Montreal, just after midnight one New Year's Day. Neither of us was very sober, so we went for a (very short - it was -20 outside) walk the next afternoon down by the waterfront in Pointe-Claire and made sure we still meant it in the cold light of day. I swear my knee almost stuck to the ground through my trousers it was so bloody cold.

Driving to the A&W I said something about "when we get married" she didn't say over my dead body or anything, about a year later we were married.

Neither one of us can remember the exact circumstances but the above is close enough.

I'm afraid I have to add to the unromantic pile.......

....after living together for 7 years a friend of mine confirmed that if I died my pension would go the government rather than my partner...........the registry office was visited very swiftly.........we witnessed the said friends 'wedding' and they witnessed ours.

I can remember the Registrars look of horror when we told her that not one of us had brought a camera to record the happy event.

......that was many years ago and we are still happily married.

a man in love is not complete until he is married ...and when he's married he's finished
