Does anyone else do what I do, I wonder? When they are selling multi packs of chicken at a set price (usually $10), I check the weight of each pack.. I've bought packs that weigh 1.3kg for the same price as 870gm, It's worth looking very carefully as usually it means the equivalent of an additional chicken breast - free!

I don't mind No Frills for the most part, I don't buy meat or produce though as it's never a very good price, and the Asian markets up the street have better looking meat/produce and prices so I go there instead.
. . . The issue I have with No Frills is the store is small (compared to Save On, Safe Way, Super Store.) and is very busy so it's not an ideal place to shop when you don't do well in crowded places, luckily they have a few times in the day where it's slower, right when they open at 9am or around 8pm and 2-3pm is usually okay as well. . . . Me too. My eyes start stinging, ears ringing and I get a general feeling of nausea. HID calls it my existential shudder. Fortunately the solution is usually to get the hell out of there and pop into a quiet pub/bar. |

I suppose the stuff they [No Frills] have in boxes and tins would be okay, it's just "we're" not buying stuff in boxes or tins anymore.

Since it is Loblaws owned you really have to pay attention to the price labels since Loblaws is really good at having a price in larger print then smaller print says when bought in multiples of 2
When a multi-purchase deal is involved it's the complete opposite. The big print makes it very clear what the multiple is - ie 2 for $6 - and it's the smaller print that tells you $3.99 each. I do find it weird that sometimes Pepsi will be 4 for $5 or $1.25 each. |

No Frills stores differ enormously by location. The ones in small towns, e.g. Shelburne, Mount Forest, are clean with wide spaced aisles and fresh fruit and vegetables. The downside is that they stock what people in small towns eat and we don't. The No Frills on Parliament in Toronto is another world, dirty with narrow aisles and a constant battle between the staff and the homeless. The latter wander in and chew things (fresh goods more than canned), the former chase them out and put the items back on the shelves so customers must always check for bite marks.

Walmart is the only place that consistently does that here and I never find their prices worth it unless it's further reduced. Sometimes the other stores do a $5 pack but when it's sitting next to packs sold by weight and at a glance you can tell the best value, then that guides my choice. |

Although placing well down on the list now, tourtiere was for decades considered to be the iconic Canadian dish. St. Hubert Tourtiere, $5 or so on sale at No Frills. I bought 3 and I may go back.

St Hubert pies are generally pretty good, just not worth full price. Ditto the A Table ones but Superstore don't sell them anymore. Chicken Forestiere was always my fave. |

One of the Dollar stores here had St Hubert Chicken Forestiere canned soup and one with chicken and pasta. Not available for months now but I keep checking. I like to keep a few cans of that as well as the beef barley and some ramen packets in my locker at work.

Looks like there's a shortage of Tate & Lyle golden syrup in Canuckstan at the moment, I hear they changed suppliers. When Walmart used to knock out a tin for $4 I'm not going north of 20 just to fly the flag! The miniwheels will have to wait.

We went to an underground dollarama yesterday; you go through a sketchy doorway next to no frills, down some stairs... and inside of nude wimmen, a massive dollarama.

New Superstore flyer, 4 day special from Thursday...prime rib premium roast $4.77 lb. That's unmissable. Salmon fillet @ $8.77 all week is pretty good too. |

Ohh good spot. AAA beef as well. Often I find that when Loblaws (Dominion here) have beef on special its AA. Ok for stews etc but not as good for roasts.
Previously I've bought plenty of the 'rounds' and cross ribs @ $3 or $4 lb for roasts or steak and sometimes they've been good, other times not. The same flyer also has AAA whole eye of round for $3.99 and it looks good in the picture, but I would only use it for the slow cooker these days. Prime rib and tenderloin only for roasts for me. Am I becoming a beef snob? By way of contrast Sobeys also advertises the prime rib AAA this coming week @ $12.99  It says Sterling...is that a step up again? |

I never pay too much attention to that. I know I've been very happy with AA before and, no doubt, less happy, but I wonder if it's because having a bit more money now, I tend to buy the better joints anyway.

Re: Groceries
I like sirloin better than prime rib which is often too fatty. The rounds are best seared and medium rare or cooked as a pot roast in the pressure cooker.
I'm heading to the city tomorrow as its senior discount day in Shoppers so I'll look at the prime rib while I'm there. |

It's the nuke method I use for prime rib. 450F for 40-45 mins or so then 400 for the remaining time. I find the fat has either disappeared by then or is only attached to the bone part which I separate when mostly cooked. At that point I can see what more is needed or just 'rest' it. Two of us like rare and two like well done so outer parts and inner parts do nicely. I've always enjoyed a roast beef because the taste of everything together has been good. Similar with Turkey Vs a turkey dinner. But I've never been very good at doing it nicely until I discovered the 450F for the first part with a boneless cross rib and it came out brilliantly. It didn't come out so well the next time :( whereas the prime rib is great every time. Rib eye makes great steak but not seen that often. |

Oh the shame. :o I actually meant I didn't see it much in the supermarket, which is even more embarrassing now  But whenever I have bought some it really hasn't looked like a prime rib minus the bone, it actually looked much leaner. |

I only remember sirloin, t-bone and rump for steak and silverside or topside for roasts. Fillet mignon only existed in restaurants. I expect I might recall more if prompted but I never heard of inside round outside round shake it all about round, cross rib and all the rest... |
