EDIT: Worth a look into, as people are trying to be more cost conscious. Look at the rise of Aldi/Lidi: discount German chain, huge in the UK and Aldi broken successfully into AU. |

If you were to go there you might see that there's a big Home Hardware store just south of them on highway 6. It has a huge newly built drive shed; a building with a roof and hitching posts that can accommodate maybe ten horse and cart combos. The No Frills across the road also has hitching posts.

Hey Siouxie, cheers now figured that out with your help. But still unsure about caretakers response, ie what does this change for me?

Re: Groceries
[QUOTE=Siouxie;12320175]I think he meant it is easier to guide you to where you might find specific items if your where-abouts is known. Some stores are generic, others are Province specific.
:) /QUOTE] OK noted but still unsure how this forum and linking my location, will help with my google searches for supermarkets.... Does Google note my location from BE and provide me with customised searches? EDIT, I guess from reviewing this after posting you mean other members providing specifics regarding my location. I suppose still being a newbie in the country, I am unaware that each state supermarkets could offer very different items from what I posted. They seemed pretty generic to me.

The pertinent example is Giant Tiger... exists in Ontario but not in BC. If you want to know where to buy bacon or where the markets are your location makes a difference. Google notes everything, (and so does everything else on the internet); great search engine but nosy as hell. If you don't want to be tracked use Duckduckgo. I didn't like it enough to keep using it. |

And thank you caretaker, for your feedback, Canada is a large country and still coming to grips with the minor details. Australia dominated by two chains and really nothing else. Canada while still dominated by a few chains, still has variety. |
Re: Groceries
Some things you may be used to are hard to come by here. We've had multiple threads from people wanting to find fresh lamb without paying a fortune, and the answer is often make friends with a farmer. In time you'll find out what's in your area.

Note to self, get out more and explore the countryside! |
Re: Groceries
I quite liked Giant Tiger in the short time I was in Ontario. Even the so called higher priced stores in ON like Sobeys tended to have cheaper prices then what you find in Metro Vancouver/Fraser Valley area.

I can't speak for Ontario but the GT here has much improved from a few years ago when it was only good for the odd bit of frozen food or tin. Much of the food used to be cheap store brand where you can tell it's cheap and the quality of the clothing was poor.

As long as you get use out of it. Too small, maybe drape across the shoulders. Too big can still keep you warm. Failing that, remove the label and sew it on something else. ;) |

It's a treasure trove along with Dollarama. |
Re: Groceries
My winter boots came from GT. $35 two years ago which uncannily was the same price as the first pair I bought from Zellers in 2005.
I got 10 years use and I can still wear them as long as it's not wet out as the cracks in the soles now suck up water. |
Re: Groceries
I've seen some shoddy items in Giant Tiger's clothing section, and some out and out factory rejects so I go for the other sale stuff; toilet paper, laundry detergent, some food items. At the check-out I often see seniors or people with kids who may not want to go to several stores (which I don't mind) with their carts full. Also a lot of meddling grannies buying baby and toddler clothes.

I can't help you with the first 2, but for the bacon the nearest I have found (other than going to a British shop) is Lou's double smoked back bacon - you will find it with the pre-cooked chicken, ham steaks etc., not with the bacon.
https://www.walmart.ca/en/ip/lous-bb.../6000195368385 I usually wait until it's on sale and then buy a load and freeze them! Edited to add, apparently Metro Fish Dept will order fresh herring if you request it, it's only available by special order (it may be worth asking in other stores too) https://www.metro.ca/en/products-to-...eafood/herring :) |

https://www.facebook.com/growingbrokefarm/ Occasionally we have customers ask how we compare to grocery store pricing. We always explain that our product is not what you are getting in the grocery store; you aren't comparing apples to apples. The burgers on the left are from our grassfed highland beef cattle, the burgers on the right are from a box from the grocery store... Spoiler:
That's just about the worst of the store burgers available. There are plenty that look like theirs. I will forgive them, though, if they will send me some Cumberland sausages. :o  |

I can sort you out with a new passport. http://i.adstric.com/0000231633/High...-driver--1.jpg I'll need a mugshot though. No teacups. |
Re: Groceries
The supposed good ones look the same as the ones I got from a box at the grocery store. The bad looking on in that photo is what, no names variety?
Those are nasty things.

Giant Tiger had the BV stuffed chicken breasts on for $2 again so I bought another 5 packs.

For me $21 for 800g of parmesan is big spending, but I couldn't see another way. The wild Newfoundland garlic and tomatoes from my friend's garden deserves the good stuff.

Re: Groceries
Good week for Superstore. Highlights from the new flyer:
T-bone steak @ $6.99 lb 10 Corn for $3 Large water melon for $3 PC Cheese bars (for cooking/toasting ;)) for $3.77 20 cooked chicken wings $10 Christie cookies&crackers for $1.67 Banana strawberry bagels. Sod the $3.99, I have to try  32 inch smart TV $198 (no tax Saturday) |
Re: Groceries
Good example of why Shoppers Drug Mart should not be ignored.
As well as more often than not being the cheapest for pepsi/coke/7up/sprite, basic cheese, eggs, sliced bread, butter, chocolate and toiletries if you're not brand loyal, this week they advertised PC coffee pods for $5.99 for 12, including the strong but wonderfully smooth Sumatra version. That's a fantastic price. Only the real cheap stuff ever gets down to around 50c a cup. Of course it's cheaper again by the tin for the PC dark roast - but I have a tower of 5 tins of that already - mostly @ $7.99 from Shoppers by the way ;). I also bought ASA 81mg, on offer. You do well to get 120 for $10-$12 so 180 for $15.99 is pretty good...and then there was a bonus 30 pack attached too. |
Re: Groceries
I buy full strength Exact asa in a big bottle and cut them into 4 with a pill cutter, costs next to nothing per.
