I can't imagine they could do any more than restrict them to one per household, if they are actually cards, but then what of couples who were not in the same household for the time in question?
They could probably get so tied up in it that it's probably easiest to jsut dish out to whoever applies. Might even be a condition for their immunity.

It looks/sounds very badly organized to me. What about people in shared accommodation (same address)? Seems - so far - that sign-up is solely sorted by email address? So anyone -whether or not they shop at Loblaws - can apply?

I’m going to try to remember to follow the saga as it unfolds.

I must have 4 or 5 email addresses...gmail, work domain gmail, hotmail, icloud and an old rogers.com email that is a good gatherer of spam.

No idea. We are both going to apply. The same address might be a giveaway.

Regarding the Loblaws $25 bread rebate, although nothing has been announced yet the method they use now to track customers is the PC Points Card and PC Mastercard. If I was them I'd use that, and require those who don't have either to register, maybe even pay it out as grocery credits/PC points (if they can get away with it) ensuring their money stays in-house.

HID [her-in-doors] said she'll make breakfast on Christmas morning and asked what would I like? After the initial shock of her acknowledging that we actually have a kitchen, I'm not sure what to ask for. It seems like one of those "once in a lifetime" opportunities. Got any help?

From some of your previous posts I'd have thought the thing she'd least like to cook. :p

But I think you have your answer in your post on the breakfast thread, having just seen it.

Ask for crepes and champagne and orange juice; if she's offering let her make something she likes, and try for kippers on New Year's morning later (when you'll have a hangover and appreciate them more anyway). This way you get breakfast and manage to come off looking sensitive.

That's just a bonus, besides the kippers have to be poached in milk and water to get salt out but not too much, then drained and fried in butter until golden brown and the skin side slightly crispy. If she's going to be making faces while cooking she isn't going to get it right and he's better off doing it himself anyway. Any points he makes Christmas morning by catering to her go towards him being allowed to stink the kitchen up and drink on New Year's morn, and on that day it may even be advisable to slip her a couple of drinks ahead of time, (maybe get some Shooting Sherry or something). All those algae smoothies have to be worth a little payback.

Have we talked about that annoying and useless water spray thing that Canadian and US supermarkets do?

If not then we should if we have what was said?

It's a bit awkward for lettuces when you want to bag them but it seems to keep stuff fresh.

I don't remember Tesco and Waitrose having a problem with freshness. The water just adds extra weight to the goods and provides a nice damp place for bugs to grow, IMHO. If it keeps stuff fresh then why do staff have to trim the rotten bits off?

I was never wealthy enough to shop at Waitrose :p:lol:
Maybe the product in the UK doesn't stay on the shelf so long. Cheaper produce combined with more people there wanting to eat healthily, maybe?

With the North American habit of buying lots of fast food, if they do buy healthier perhaps they buy the prepared bagged/trayed stuff.

I've never seen that done. They do it my local meat/fruit & veg and everything else store and then sell it for half price.

Thanks for the advice but the offer has been rescinded due to her setting up the dining room table ready for Christmas dinner. I thought that just entailed putting out plates, knives and forks and crackers but no, it's much more elaborate than that, she's come home with two bags full of Christmas stuff. I'm just waiting for the, 'no lager on the table' legislation. :(

Yep, they trim the outside bits off cabbages and sprouts and put them back out for sale.

Dunno about eating healthier there's way more choice of ready meals in the UK but your point about how long stuff stays on the shelf is a good one.

Re: Groceries

The week just ended (sorry) saw Superstore selling PC pods in a 30 pack for $14.99, about $3 or $4 less than usual. Each pack had 4000 points, worth $4.
That's pretty good, 30 cups for $11= 37c each.

I bought two packs and discovered that my PC card had product specific bonus points, so 60 cups after adjustment cost me just over $19, or 32c each.

Shame the 30 packs don't include PC Sumatra, but at least the "west coast" dark roast was included - that's the one I buy the big tins of for $8 or $9 instead of $16.

However this week's flyer does have the 12 pack Sumatra version for $6.99 plus 1000 points so, again it works out to $6 for 12 pods/50c a cup.

Re: Groceries

Superstore doesn't seem to be making a very good job of highlighting how much you "saved today" anymore.

You'd think they'd like their customers to believe they made a higher saving wouldn't you. It all seems to be an under estimation these days whereas previously they always made reductions appear bigger than they were.

My receipt today shows a saving of $21.29.

I bought 14 pepsi bottles for 99c. When not on offer, they are over $2 so there's at least $14 saved on pepsi.
I bought a dozen things between $1 and $4 off.

By my estimation I saved about $47 and that's not including any 50% off stuff approaching its date. I also accrued a further $11 worth of bonus reward points.

MIL bought a dozen bottles of pepsi and a few other things that were $2 off, so saved about $23 but her receipt shows no saving.

I don't think I've ever had a drink that has tasted as nice as Pepsi (or coke back in the days that was my preference). Diet version, of course, the full fat version is too strong. Certainly not alternative colas.

Seriously I mean that. Various beers over the years...Samuel Smith, Ruddles, Royal Oak and all the rest....lovely to drink but the pleasure there is the leisurely drinking.

If you're thirsty, by all means ordinary water. It even seems to taste nice when you build up a thirst cycling in Egypt.

But under normal circumstances, when you want a quick hit of something tasting nice, it's pepsi. MIL is the main consumer though. I'm just a 2 or 3 glasses a day person, preferring the comfort of coffee.

Thanks for that. A lot of detail there
I've read a few things before and concluded "I'm okay" in terms of the effects and dangers.

My biggest danger comes from my mother in law. Sometimes I think she's trying to kill me with 'kindness'

Yes, both is a good option too. I've stopped buying huge supplies of soft drinks, and just buy a single bottle of Coke which I dip into now and then. I agree, it's a nice taste, and I think it's good to go back to basics on it (1970's) and have it as a treat instead of relying on it as a main drink as the retailers have taught us to do.

One of my great shopping pleasures is checking out the "YOU SAVED xx TODAY!" on my receipt when I get home from Freshco. Usually its $10-20, I hit $30 once.

Waves Scottish flag of thriftfulness!

FreshCo - My wife's favourite grocery store (but we buy our meat elsewhere). Great choice, especially in 'exotic / ethnic' food!

I worked for one of the big US soda beverage companies at their head office back in the early 00s and in every little break room or alcove they had big fridges full of all their brands/products and we could help ourselves throughout the day for free although we couldn't take any home. Unfortunately, I only drank water. In hindsight, it seems such a wasted opportunity.

We stopped going to No Frills. The insanity of that store isn't worth it....

It's always crowded, store is small which makes it even worse, they never have sufficient check outs open and not self check out so forced to stand 10-15 mins in one of the 2 or 3 lines they do have open.

And they sell way too much processed boxed foods and not enough other foods.

Back to Save On with an overall nice shopping experience...

I agree with on all counts. We use Save On on Cambie, it has the benefit of a liquor store across the street and EB Games around the corner.

Hi we are moving over in the summer and after reading posts on here about the cost of cheese, myself and my husband decided to do a quick search on Wal-Mart for cheese. We could not find any cheese (proper cheese like cheddar) only powdered or in a can "cheese whizz"? As a couple of cheese loving northerners we cannot believe there is no proper cheese in Canada. Do you need to go to some type of deli etc for cheese? Many thanks.

Walmart have cheese, albeit not that great.

The other grocery stores also stock many different types of cheeses, though if you want really good ones you can visit a specialty cheese store.
