I had to google tourtiere. It's minced meat pie is it? Is it like a cornish pasty but in a pie?

The Quebecers on here could maybe answer that, I've only had commercial tourtiere, (Schneider's and St Hubert) and the only Cornish pasties I've had are those I made myself. It's about 180 degrees away from health food, just so there's no misunderstanding.

Kind of. First visit bought 5 (all they had left) second 6 (some left). I generally don't buy more than half a dozen of promotions as I leave some for other people. Also bought 3 Green & Blacks at £3, and I may well dip into one of those. I actually don't like HD Belgian Chocolate flavour that much. GB is plain chocolate.

So on Saturday, in the Foreign Foods section, a Canadian chap asked me if Beetroot was the same as Beets. He's heard of Beets, never beetroot (he was holding a jar of polish pickled beetroot). I was so flabbergasted clearly my reply wasn't trustworthy so after being assured it was the same he went and asked someone else.

In hindsight was probably an old boy who'd never used a supermarket before and needed directing to the regular pickles section.

Nobody but Brits calls it beetroot, they're beets, same as carrots aren't called carrot-root, parsnips aren't called parsnip-root, etc.

Ahem. The kiwis over here in the land the world forgot definately call 'em beetroots and it is beetroot with everything.

Personally I would only call the red ones beetroots. Any other beets are plain old beets.

I'm thinking I might start using carrotroots and parsniproots in my best UK West Country accent to confound the buggers. Make a change from saying mangleworzel on demand.

Beetroot is red and delicious.

Beets (sugar beets) are pale and not edible as food.

In Canada, beets are red and delicious. We don't eat sugar beets (known as sugar beets in Canada), but in Alberta they grow them and make granulated sugar and bad liquor out of them.

Abbreviating beetroot to 'beets' is perhaps just N.American laziness when it comes to language... :p

We don't eat sugar beets either, and we also make granulated sugar out of them. I'm not aware of any UK liquor produced from sugar beet.

I wonder if "carrot" is already an old diminutive of "car-root"?

Or possibly not bothering to learn the language is just laziness on the part of immigrants. The notion that anything British is "proper" and anything contrary is incorrect is quaint, and reminds me of my dear Aunt Madeline (bless her soul). She was my favourite Aunt, but quite eccentric.

If someone asked me for beetroot it would throw me off for a moment, I think I would realize though they want beets, never heard beetroot used before, also had no idea there were more than one kind, always thought beets were just red ones you buy in the store that grandma always made but nobody ever ate...lol

It is! And so is lunch and dinner  An 'Aussie burger with the lot' is very democratic, it can be eaten by anyone, at any time.

Beetroot notwithstand, that is one very fine looking burger !! It's so tall though I think you'd need a knife and fork to handle it.

I probably only eat one two times a year max, but when I do I sort of dismantle it and eat it bit by bit. Chefie types would call it a deconstructed burger  The beetroot's usually the first to go, I love it but usually only eat home made.

I might be inclined to clear out the bottom 1/3 which is salad and eat it separately so I can get a bite at the rest.

I would deconstruct and pick at it with a knife and fork. I'm not good with the fingers thing.

MrBEVS would give it several hefty pats to squish it down and then just shove it in his gob & be unable to talk . Ugh!

I use my fingers to eat whenever it's possible, and sometimes when it's not. Just in case people think I'm a total grot, I do always wash my hands before meals though!

Without the Brits there wouldn't have been any English language in Canada dahling; can't blame the colonials though, the English language has been bastardised for too many years for them to know any different.

Beets when speaking to a Canadian
Beetroot when speaking properly to a Brit.

True, the exploitative policies of colonial Britain, (which left it reviled as as oppressor world-wide), did indeed spread the language. Can't blame the British for the deterioration of their spoken English though, too many factors against them, innit?

No Frills has refried beans for $2/can so stocked up and bought 10 cans.

I really love refried beans with some cheese, was something I ate often in the US since they are so cheap there, its a filling and cheap meal in the US and a US can is larger so can usually get 2 meals from 1 can there, so could easily have 2 meals for under $2 including a bit of cheese.

So not just the brits then... especially as the aussies took the pickled beetroot, ran with it and ended up with these beauties:

That's especially true when they're out of season. Tomatoes for example, often $1/lb in summer go to $2.47 in winter, and the quality often goes down. Not paying extra for woody tomatoes. When this happens I would rather use canned diced tomatoes I've stocked up on for $1/can for making chili, spaghetti sauce, etc, even saganaki. When the fresh ones are nice and on sale I'll get some because you can't make a bacon and tomato sandwich with canned tomatoes. The cucumbers that were $1 or .88 are also $2.47 now and they look terrible. I did just buy a lovely cabbage for .77/lb, or about $2.50 and that's as healthy as it comes.
