The Crown. It's a Netflix series and I think it's tremendous. Good period costume drama at it's best. Matt Smith, who I never took to as the Doctor is a very good the Duke of Edinburugh or should that be Edinbro!

I'm guessing this is a serious thread about intelligent dramas (no I haven't read the thread) but I have just found out that the guy with the big beard on 'Pitch' (unintelligent baseball drama, Thursday nights, love it) is the blond kid from 'Saved by the Bell'. My mind is blown. That is all.

Apparently some of this is filmed in the village we lived in in Scotland. Does anyone know if I can use my son's Netflix password?

Just try it. If it works it works.

I've only seen the trailer, but didn't think the actress looked anything like Elizabeth.

First episode was quite good. The ever good Jared Harris was excellent.

As a fan of Downton and the original Upstairs Downstairs series, I was wondering if this was any good.

The original? The one from 1971 to 1975?

Did you watch on UK Gold or have you regenerated like The Doctor?

Nope and nope - you tube all the way

Love it and it was sooo much better then the remake the BBC attempted to do.

I was never keen on costume dramas and I was still at school when it started, so it was considered a bit soppy. But I always enjoyed Upstairs Downstairs and it seemed quite 'grown up' viewing to me.

There's one line that always stands out. One of the characters is talking about the latest technology - a wireless that will enable people to be entertained at home and how it needs an antenna.
Mr Hudson says "That's absurd Edward. Imagine every house in London with a wee pole sticking up from the roof."

Brilliantly clever in joke about TV on a TV show.

It wasn't just costume dramas I was never keen on but historical stuff too. The Forsyte Saga, The Onedin Line...didn't like any of these.

There were exceptions of course. When the Boat comes in. The Monocled Mutineer. Pennies from Heaven.

I have my mother to blame as she was the one who got me into them.

I really liked the one about the hotel, I think it was called The Grand and it was on ITV in the late 90s.

Speaking of costume dramas and hotels, that reminds me I've still got a few episodes left of The Duchess of Duke Street to watch.

I am loving Last Tango in Halifax at present. I watched it by myself, and am now watching it again with my husband - its better second time around. It is quite brilliant and funny and a nice portrayal of the changing sexual mores in practical terms in modern families. We are on the last part tonight, I am sorry to say

Thanks for the reminder. I saved that some time ago but forgot about it. It's probably tucked away on an external HD now after multiple clean-ups of an over cluttered desktop.

Seasons 1 and 2 are on Netflix Canada but Season 3 hasn't appeared there yet.

It is also now gone from the BBC Iplayer.

I'm not really a great fan of the royals with the exception of HM The Queen. To me she always exemplifies true noblesse oblige. As to the rest of them I view them as parasites living off the public purse, witness Andrew and his two ugly daughters.
My wife convinced me to watch The Crown and I admit to getting hooked. The show is well done with excellent sets and actors. How true is the presentation I do not know, but it tends to show the royals as they probably are, warts and all. I'm looking forward to the next series.
I'll now wait to be excoriated by the royal family aficionados.
