I read this article about Shannon Matthews a couple of weeks ago, it's by Melanie Reid the Times columnist...just thought I would post it, it's quite thought provoking....

I've just read the article and have to say felt angry how it was written, in a very much them and us style.

Us wonderful economically and emotionally well off middle class who heaven forbid dear times readers could never be described as being 'poor' in any sense, and them - that lost corner of society who "we" will never in our lifetime (and thankfully) experience.

What does this stupid woman think happens on a council estate or anywhere else that doesn't fit into the 2.4 children mould for that matter.

Yes the article is geared at Times readers, those who own holiday homes in Norfolk, but to me its writings like this that strengthen the subconcious class divide. Making the time that when - oh no - a middle class times reader may happen across a poorer working class family. The first thing they'll think is that the children are being abused by a step parent and the mother couldn't give a shit.

Child emotional neglect happens across the board, be you well off financially or not.

Why not? Men are supposed to suppress their natural urges to hump anything with a pulse, so why can't women suppress their desire to breed? It's not as if the world's underpopulated.

That artical literally made me sick.... Its not just the poor that are bad parents. Take a look at Madeline's parents both doctors and they thought it was OK to leave there 3 kids 4 and under in a hotel room by themselves? I'm just a university drop out with bad spelling, and I even know better.

I dont understand why people wont adopt if they cant have children but desperately want them and I always imagined that it would be the men who wanted to perpetuate their genes rather than the women. Obviously I am wrong.

I cant have children, but would have adopted had I met MOH when I was younger, so I can't see why you wouldnt want to adopt?? I know a couple of families who did, they didnt adopt babies either, but older kids. I dont think their bond with their children is any less than if the woman had borne them, or if they had had their genes.

As for the article, it is rather patronising but it does speak the truth about the state of many families, its a shame that it calls these people working class, as thats not my idea of working class, nor does it represent the working class that I come from. You cant deny that these people exist. Rich people when they dont like their kids can just send them away to school or park them with the nanny.

A mans desire to 'hump' everything in site pretty much all the time is the only

The whole point that I got out of that column is that the haves should not care about the have nots because they are morally superior, which is stupid!

I was born and bred (as were my wife and kids) in that town - they are a purer breed of mutant on the Moorside.

What with this case, the 7/7 bomber and the BNP councillors constantly getting elected - I must have been out of my mind leaving an area with such a bright future. I'd laugh if I wasn't crying inside so much - I have fond memories of the place as a child.
