Heating Oil Suppliers in NS
If you live in NS and use Heating Oil - who is your supplier and how much is your oil per litre.
We use Wilsons and they are currently charging us $1.01 and I just wondered if this was about right or if I could get it cheaper!
Thanks in advance.

Is the pricing of fuel regulated in NS by the govt? It is here in NL so pretty much all the heating oil suppliers charge the same. My FiL had his tank filled today at $1.13 per litre so count yourself fortunate at $1.01!

Hi
We use Irving and our last fill was at 0.94/l. We negotiated a 5c discount on whatever their current rate is as my OH could get a better deal with Ultramar who supply his workplace and Irving matched it. We arrived just too late to cap this year, you can usually do this until Sept with Irving.

A service contract. They maintain and service the furnace. It costs about $300 per year which gives 24 hour emergency call out and a once yearly check and clean. In addition we have our fuel auto delivered. The capped price was agreed back last summer so I guess we did ok out of it!

One of the ways the large companies actually get people to pay these higher prices is by locking them into contracts attached to the lease of their furnace or hot water heaters. It's a ridiculous practice if you ask me. When we bought out house we discovered that the hot water tank was leased by Thermoshell and we had to take over the lease. Thermoshell then sent us Agreement forms to sign for the supply of oil. When I told them I didnt want them to supply our oil they told me I didnt have a choice - it was a condition of the lease. In the end I paid about $600 to "buy out" the lease on the water heater so I could get my oil from whoever I wanted.

Agree regarding the locked in supply when leasing the hardware. We own our furnace and feel we have a really good deal with Wilsons at 84.9c litre. Having had the furnace fail on three occasions in the past two years resulting in around $2000 worth of repairs I think the service contract is well worth the cash.

There was an article in the Chronicle Herald a while back listing what everyone charged - it was quite shocking actually. All the large companies (including Shell, Irving, Wilsons etc) we charging 10c per litre more than a handfull of discount suppliers. And the prices amoung these large companies were all the same so it seemed pretty obvious that they were price fixing to me. I think we use Discount Fuels. It's exactly the same product (since all the oil here comes from the same refinery anyway) but the cost is around 10c a litre less than the big companies.
