Girl found alive

Not sure if you all read about the 9 year old, Shannon Matthews, who disappeared about a month ago. After all that time, the chances of her being found alive were pretty slim. But she was found alive today, she had been abducted and was shut in the bottom of a divan bed in some guy's house not far from where she lived.

Those stories almost never have a happy ending like this.

Yeegh. You'd think they could find a more flattering picture of her. Although if I had a kid that looked like that, I'd probably want to hide her somewhere too.

Apparently the guy was distantly related to her step-father.

It was clear she was abducted, but a lot of the stuff that came out early on was weird (the kid didn't want to go home, she was crying because she had to, etc.)...I figured she was being abused by someone (because that is NOT normal kid behaviour), and either they took her or someone else got their hands on her.

I hated how the McCann's jumped on this bandwagon though. While I feel sorry for Madeleine, the parents should be charged with neglect. There is no way they are ever going to find their kid alive after all this time.

Pretty disgusting how little coverage this girl's disappearance got compared with the middle class photogenic McCanns.

Hmmm. Something's going on, certainly. She's now the subject of an "emergency police protection order" and will be held by the police while the full circumstances are investigated. If there was no suspicion of family involvement - or at least look-the-other-way collusion - why would they do that?

Didn't I also read that she has an older brother who's a habitual runaway? All sounds deeply fishy to me.

Or disgusting the amount of coverage the McCanns got for something which isn't really that big a deal. Still, at least this one was white and British. Notherwise we probably wouldn't have heard a peep.

Real nice thing to say, I take it you don't have kids.

Somehow I had completely missed this.

I can only begin to imagine the relief and joy of the parents after all that time (if they were innocent in all this...what a horrible thing to suspect!).

As liz said, its very unusual for there to be a happy ending after more than a day or two missing. I just hope that in time she recovers from whatever abuse was inflicted.

As far as the McCanns go, if I were in the same situation I would go after every last line of publicity too to get my kid back.

Oh lighten up. This would be a really dull thread otherwise. And I better I'm not the only one who thought that when they saw the picture.

I don't have enough money to indulge in an expensive hobby like breeding.

There are several hundred children missing from schools in the UK that are being forced into arranged marriages. This was reported recently but didn't cause the slightest stir.

As to MM - her parents were clued up on how to work the British media which is why she got such a huge amount of coverage (it turned into a phenomenon really). Shannon Matthews got the 'standard' amount of coverage IMO.

I hope you're training at least one of them to be a lawyer so you've got some chance of a return on your investment.

Thank God for small mercies
