Not sure it had any effect on our language, but it must have sunk in if I can remember it thirty-something years later.

"reactionary" sounds to me like a frustrated politician. Offending the middle classes smacks of a chip on the shoulder. Ignorance? Well until you've actually experienced what police officers have to do to protect the disaffected and not so, perhaps you should show a bit more respect and humility. I was brought up to believe sarcasm is the lowest form of wit, and if you've nothing decent or constructive to say, say nothing at all. But then im from a middle class working family so what do i know?!

I can still remember what my junior school headmaster said about the overuse of swearing. I think there had been a rash of more-than-usually foul language in the playground, so he addressed us in morning assembly. His "sermon" was pretty much that if you swore too much the swearwords would lose their ability to shock - so it'd be better to save them for the rare occasions (like hitting your thumb with a hammer) when you really needed them.

Thick enough to have coped with a Gulf war and the present work yes thank you. I'm sure you're not as derogatory and ignorant in the flesh are you?

Actually - I'm going to leave this here. I've no interest in having a war of words with a touchy copper. That wasn't the intent of this thread and if you can't see that, then it's your loss.
