'England's shocking decline ...

I think we dealt with that tangent already; the population of the UK is skewed towards the SE of England, just as the population of Canada is skewed towards the Quebec-Windsor corridor. NotIain and the Queen nonetheless manage to find leafy spaces within those areas.

These are companies that sell their products door-to-door using high-pressure sales techniques leading you to believe they're putting a "cap" on your gas/electricity prices, or worse - that they're actually part of your utility company.
They get you to sign a contract that they don't give you time to read if they sucker you in (the salesman we had wouldn't leave until it was signed), then follow that up with a phone call ten days later in which you can say "no"...
...or in our case, we don't get a copy of the contract, the OH thinks we're geting a good deal after incessant hassling from the salesman on the phone at a bad time and you end up paying an inflated price for your gas for the next five years.
Most Canadians know about this.
We newcomers didn't and got stung.
We even contacted the regulatory body for the energy market in Ontario and their response, far from being sympathetic, even though several of their guidelines for how these companies operate were broken, is "tough".

If it were a deliberate policy it would not be incompetence as I suppose they could say it was a great success story......Actually thats what I think they say, i.e a success story, to try to pretend that they are in more control than they actually are.

Ah well, you should have just said, "I'm new here, I'll have to ask my friends on the expat website..."
