"The big one" is due here sometime between now and the next 500 years. I have about 25 years left so I quite fancy my chances of avoiding it.

TO all the smug people...Australians didn't think they'd get an earthquake, yet Newcastle had one. Christchurch was never supposed to get the big one...the fault line was unknown before Sept last year.

Recent findings concluded the Cascadia subduction zone was more hazardous than previously suggested. The feared next major earthquake has some geologists predicting a 10 to 14% probability that the Cascadia Subduction Zone will produce an event of magnitude 9 or higher in the next 50 years,[9] although the most recent studies suggest that this risk could be as high as 37%.[10][11] Geologists have also determined the Pacific Northwest is not prepared for such a colossal earthquake. The tsunami produced may reach heights of approximately 30 meters (100 ft).

And they have been saying the same thing about WEllington for years yet Christchurch got it which no one saw coming.

Looking at this most of New Zealand is high/very high risk with a small area moderate. Is that where Christchurch is?
