Dundas Street - and good ideas for a renaming ?

Why do the Canadians want to rename it and does that apply to the town(s) too?

Street of the First Nations.

With every major intersection representing a group or something from the First Nations culture and history.

Oh, are they still droning on about that oppression thing? I suppose there was a Mr. Dundas and he's out of vogue. Right then:

Genocide Way. Cultural Elimination Street. Vanquished Minority Drive. Assimilation Avenue.

Slavery Street. That was Dundas' thing.
When I first read your post I thought it said Assassination Avenue, and that sounded like fun. Visiting dignitaries would be told there's an obligatory parade...

That would get messy, wouldn't it !!

Oooo, Trump could be invited, Johnson, the Polish and Hungarian leaders, Bolsonaro ....

It would be better if the original names are retained and indigenous names added to them.. as they did on Spadina.. rather than replacing completely.

Adding names makes it more confusing in my opinion. A mixture of colonial and indigenous names seems an ok compromise though.

What about all the companies that produce maps be it paper or digital? Will a Sat Nav have enough room to display the road you are on?
I don't really care if they change them which should also have been an option for the poll.

If there was a "don't care" option everyone would choose that !

The thing is, it's not just Dundas street that is going to be renamed:

The city will also remove the Dundas name from other public infrastructure, including the TTC's Dundas and Dundas West subway stations and Yonge-Dundas Square, a central location in downtown Toronto. Other civic assets bearing the Dundas name include three parks, one Toronto Public Library branch and more than 730 street signs.


It seems that if anyone dare to think of commenting against this then they are instantly branded as being a racist.

It seems old Dundas has become a persona non grata.

What about changing Dundas to Dunderhead ... should be easy to remember, and obliquely references the orginal guy.

I am surprised Vancouver hasn't done street renaming, there is a Dundas Street in Vancouver as well as others.

I have no idea who Dundas is, I venture most of your average residents of any city today have no idea who streets are named after, but gives a good example as to why it's bad to name things after people, what is accepted today, may not be 100-200 years from now, the people of Toronto 150 years from now (of the city still exists) will likely find some of the things being done today as not acceptable.
