Dogs and the cold
#16
Our dogs live outside all year and don't have a problem, so it's probably because indoor dogs aren't used to it as much. Though on nights like last night they did come in (though hubby doesn't know that

We used to take my boy out in all weather conditions, and definitely colder than -25. Sometimes I used to put vaseline on his paws, but never tried boots and I dont think he'd have worn them anyway.
We used to always see other dogs with boots and whatnot on, so I wouldnt worry too much about the locals laughing.

The last 3 days is the coldest we've had since we arrived 9 weeks ago. Our dog loves the snow and has been walking/playing in it happily but in the last few days the temps have dropped (this morning it's -25 and -34 with windchill).
Our dog can only manage about 2 minutes in the garden without limping so i've purchased coat and boots for her!!! Before I take her for a walk and look completely stupid to the locals - is it normal to need these things or do dogs just adapt to the cold? I cant imagine making her walk in this without protection but i've not seen one other dog wearing anything on their feet!

You could always try Dog Martens or Hush Puppies

Our SAMOYED had "Muttluks" boots to go for winter walks in as his pads would get irritated with the ice and snow and no, it's not stupid. Just ask the mushers in the Iditarod:

We used booties for our dog last winter, she's a Bloodhound/Harrierhound. The only problem is that after a couple of minutes bounding around the boots start slipping off. So at the moment my OH is sat at the sewing machine attaching elastic to the boots that will stretch over the dogs back to hold them up.
The same theory as an Amish farmer and a pair of trousers!

Boots all the way - saying that our chow would rather not go out if it' means boots but he does have them on when it's below -23 ish because of the ice balls that form around his feet. He used to wear a rain coat on wet days but now refuses to go out if there is a slight chance that the cloud in the distance should fling a rain drop at him
BTW boots with velcro that go around the top are the best to buy as they are harder to get off.

The poodle doesn't get clipped during the winter. He won't wear booties though, I guess even poodles have standards.
The springer just doesn't care/notice. We have had to drag him inside during blizzards.

The OP is in Alberta though and I don't think they use salt much in Alberta. Certainly in Calgary they didn't, and they don't up here in the north of the province.
