Impressed myself- it's in my diary already.

Downtown venue with half decent warm beer I hope?

We usually do The Scotland Yard. They have a room off to the side that's a bit more removed so it's more conducive to chatting and such, plus they do separate bills without any fuss. Decent drinks selection and a good food menu, plus seems to be accessible to pretty well everyone since it's about a 5-6 minute walk from Union... so until anyone voices any strong objections I suspect we will just keep it there!!

(The only other place I know that does separate bills for large groups without making a fuss is The Three Brewers at Yonge & Dundas... but I prefer Scotland Yard, personally!)

Haha that was one of things I really missed when I was in the UK! More than once I got stitched up by people who didn't leave quite enough to cover tax and tip... in both countries. Separate bills just takes that all away, particularly at events like this when people tend to come and go throughout the evening.

Tax is included in the price in UK and it isn't normal to tip as that's normally included too.

When I lived in the UK and attended such large gatherings, everyone would chip in an agreed amount into a kitty and that would be used to pay for each round. It would be topped up as necessary.

It did happen far less often in the UK, admittedly. I think there was only 1-2 incidents in the 5 years i was living there, and it wasn't a huge amount that was left outstanding. VAT being included and often tip as well being included makes it much easier.

One of my get-togethers I did in Toronto when I was back for a visit, though, we went to the Bier Markt, and they didn't do separate bills. A lot of people didn't stay as late as others so just left cash by guessing at their drinks and meals... 3 of us ended up having to cover a bit over $200 left over at the end of the night. Very grumpy.

When in the UK I've made the mistake of leaving cash on the table to pay the bill...and left extra for tax and tips.
