David Ogden Stiers has died. He was 75. Best known for his role on M*A*S*H as Charles Winchester III.

He was in Star Trek too, some kind of alien. He was so good in MASH.

Yes, I don't think Frank Burns had any redeeming features but Winchester often showed a kinder side.

Still think my favourite Ken Dodd joke is

Isn't it curious that when you bang two halves of a horse together, they don't make the sound of a coconut?

I listened to The Today Programme and found myself laughing aloud.

"What a wonderful day for popping a broomstick up Nigel Mansells trousers and saying How's That For Pole Position" plus many others that were brilliant.

A very sad loss - not least to his family - but it's quite astonishing that he lived as long as he did with the disease that he had. When diagnosed in his early 20s his prognosis was that he had maybe 10 or 15 more years at most to live. That was over 50 years ago.

I vaguely knew his daughter Lucy (an old schoolfriend of a former girlfriend), but never met Hawking himself. I'd have loved to: by all accounts he was a very genuine and very funny man, albeit extraordinarily single-minded to the point that he could come across as brusque or even rude if he was busy thinking of something else.
