Now that you mention it, you really should watch The Brand New Testament, just reviewed again in the latest movie thread.

Forget other celebrities passing, RIP John Young.

I don't much care for the profession of being a military airman.. but John Young managed to atone for this by walking on the moon. I think it takes a special kind of lunatic to repeatedly sit atop large bombs and go where no-one has gone before.

Last original member of Motorhead has now died. The NWOBHM era is over. About the only heavy metal band I can listen to and even then it's only a few songs. Never understood the appeal of Iron Maiden, Saxon, Whitesnake and Judas Priest. AC/DC although not really heavy metal never did it for me either.

That's because (as Lemmy was forever pointing out) MH were not a heavy metal band. "We are Motorhead & we play rock 'n roll..."

Eddie was a class guitarist as well. Sad to hear of his passing.

(And I still love Maiden, Saxon & Priest, although each to their own :) )

We all have music that we like that others don't. For me, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Van Morrison, Miles Davis, Talking Heads, Smiths are amongst my favourites but aren't everybody's cup of tea.

I like it when people tell me they like a song I'm listening to, and who are surprised to hear it's by an artist/band they don't like.

Im with you there PD, I am a huge fan of music, its a very integral part of my life, but heavy metal does absolutely nothing for me, but as you say we all have different tastes and needs. I think many guys "like it" as they think they have to , to put out a persona of being "manly", its a way of them showing everyone they are really masculine, hardly surprising that heavy metal/hard rock is sometimes referred to as "cock rock" Im not joking its an actual term!

An electric guitar played aggressively is considered to be a very phallic. So i think its more about image than music.

As someone who has been to 100s of 'metal' gigs, I don't recognise any bloke I met at gigs who conformed to that stereotype. Most were well educated.

As for the phallic symbolism...well it IS supposed to be sex, drugs & rock 'n roll.:p
And there are plenty of female guitarists who a) are excellent musicians and b) throw the same shapes on stage.

"cock rock" is a sub genre - see 1980s cheesy Whitesnake. Please don't confuse with the rest.

We all agree that variety in music is to be cherished, and not everybody likes the same music.

My mate summed it up "There are 2 types of music in the whole world. That you like, and that you don't"

And fun...like Alberto Y Lost Trios Paranoias.
I had "Heads down, no nonsense, mindless boogie" with a B side of "Thank you" and I just discovered another version where the word Thank is replaced.

My version of this separates the two types into good and bad.
For example, 1970s pop. Good = T. Rex, Slade, Sweet etc. Bad = Middle Of The Road and Chicory Tip.

Now this is not just my taste, it's actually official. :p

Maybe I made a little bit of an over generalisation...I think many are that stereotype, but there are many fans that are not.

As for the cock rock sub genre ,many do say that Led Zepplin were a classic purveyors of cock rock, and I certainly wouldnt call them cheesy!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cock_rock

I am not taking anything away from heavy metal or and its cock rock sub genre, its just not my cup of tea. Its all about enjoying your own taste in music....keeping an open mind to other types of music and giving it a fair chance, and respecting other peoples tastes even if its not your own.

Even rap! Cant stand rap....however I will still say that they are talented artists....I would call them contemporary poets though rather than musicians.

Cock rock...some may disagree on the members of this genre but basically Def Leppard, Whitesnake, Mötley Crüe, Ratt, Warrant, Extreme, Cinderella, and the ultimate example Spinal Tap.

Not much that would have been on TOTP or daytime R1.
