Please take a look at this, if you can.....

There are many pitfalls, many of which you have listed.........toothpaste contains animal by-products as do many biscuits, ice-creams and yogurts. I'm that annoting woman in the supermarket who reads all the ables of new products! Yes, I know it's eccentric, but I like to think I do nothing to contribute to the misery of the animals with whom we share this planet.

I applaud you, it annoys me when people denigrate attempts to reduce animal cruelty by saying, "Oh that's not valid because you still do xyz". Every little helps.

Exactly,

In Britain we have what's known as rose veal (apparently much more humane) , if male calves are not used for veal then they are slaughtered at a matter of days old as they have no further use ie. milk production (obviously)

On the continent created veal is still consumed regularly unfortunately :(

For, money, and so for food. Not many jobs otherwise for the hunters.

veal is just beef slaughted around the age of six months or less about the same age as lamb. if we want the vast amount of dairy milk we currently consume, veal is the necessary, but not too evil (in the case of rose veal) outcome.

I know what you're saying - if we don't agree with veal (a lot of British veal calves are sent to the continent) we should give up cows milk in the hope of stopping calves being used for veal.

It's quite usual here for people to have one or two crated calves, just as they might have backyard chickens. Animal welfare is, I think, primarily a European and urban concern.

What is the average Canadians attitude to these hunts and indeed
the way it is carried out? Does it get much media atention? Do they talk about it?

I'm Canadian... I dislike the seal hunt because I dislike cute things being hurt. I can not even drain peas without a stray pea going down the sink alone... I always send another to keep the first company. (Yes, I'm that pathetic).

I'm also an anthropologist and I understand the histo-socio-culturio- importance the seal hunt has with various indigenous and non-indigenous communities. I'm also aware of the exploitation involved in the commercial gain various 'hunters' have who are not a part of either of these two groups.

It's not a simple "It's a bad thing, it should end" thing... to think in those terms is to not understand the complexity of 'the hunt'... historically, socially, economically, etc ...

Myself, my gutteral reaction, is 'ugh, I hate it' but it's not as simplistic as that.

Plus... as a west coaster I think... "effing east coasters..." ;)

Yes but to be objective, you must disclose the full story - that the hound bit a man's testicles.

Judging by this comment you obviously haven't read the link I provided, which is fine, but don't make rash comments. Veal is NOT "just beef slaughtered....". :(

If anyone is interested in learning about the lives of animals raised on farms, read Jeffrey Moussieff Masson's book "The Pig Who Sang to the Moon"
