I think the point is more that, at Tim Horton's, you can't get a specific thing, you can't choose what you'll get. For example, my order, "a large black coffee, please" will usually result in being handed a drink, probably hot. It won't necessarily be large, coffee or black. I can't be bothered with extended explanations so I take whatever liquid they give me.
People who want something more complicated have less chance of conveying their needs. A truly miserable experience is getting stuck behind someone who cares about tea vs. coffee, black vs. white and wants a dozen doughtnuts of specific types; sorting out each doughtnut entails the fetching of myriad trays of confections to be poked at and sneezed over. An eternity later they start on the double-doubles and whining that there's no/too much/too little sugar in it. ffs, if you care so much what it tastes like, what are you doing in Tim Hortons?
Given that the typical customer has no idea what he or she wants at the moment of reaching the counter, and the staff can't understand what's wanted anyway, it's a wonder the rare person with a simple order and exact cash doesn't kill everyone in the shop. I wouldn't judge such a person guilty.

oh try reversing it.. i know "A large Black coffee" seems simple to you and me but try this....
"Large Coffee... Black"
I've found that giving a request in the order in which they will fill it helps dum it up for them...
large -reaches for large cup
Coffee- fills it with coffee
Black- don't add anything
whereas Large black will end up in ...disaster.

They use a milky, creamy, sugary dispenser to add the cream and sugar first, two presses for double cream and two for sugar.
Otherwise they may over fill the cup. (Human error)

Fact’s about Canada’s largest and most loved franchise
http://www.youtube.com/user/cernlife1
“I’ll take a double double coffee please!†The term “double double†found its way into the Canadian Oxford Dictionary in 2004. Tim Hortons was founded in Hamilton, Ontario in 1964.
Remarkably the Tim Hortons franchise has spread across Canada and the United States. It is currently the largest franchise in Canada, after surpassing McDonalds a few years ago. I know of two Tim Hortons that are in a 1km radius of my house, and despite the fact that they are so close together, they both have non-stop customers!
Tim Hortons was named after Toronto hockey player who was a defense for 24 years. In February 1974, Tim Horton died in a car crash. After his death the franchise was completely taken over by his business partner Ron Joyce.
For 22 years Tim Hortons customers have been rolling up the rim. Since 2002 a total of 172 vehicles have been owned, 3 million dollars given out, and various other prizes. In 2007 about 88% of the prizes were redeemed.
Canadians love Their Coffee!
Surprisingly, half of the money made by Tim Hortons is brought in from their coffee. With cheaper prices, and coffee brewed every 20 minutes, it’s no wonder that Canadians love their Tim Horton’s coffee!

Sad to say, MaccyD usually wins on the number of car stakes.
What is also depressing is the number of people who seem to be buying their weekend Breakfast at MaccyD's
