We just went to see the new Rambo movie ... another story.

When we came out the snow was horizontal .... we dressed inside, with coats hats gloves hoods etc ..... then battled roughly 30 m to the small snow drift surrounding our car .... actually I got lost twice on the way and only found the car by pressing the unlock button repeatedly and looking for the flashing lights!

We all leapt in and slammed the doors and started the engine ..... and then started it again cos it stopped after about 5 secs. The external temp gauge showed -23, -24, -25, -26, -27,-28,-29 at about 3 second intervals and finally stopped at -30 The wind is apparently gusting to 54 km/hr, and it feels like -45.

So that's what -45 feels like!

Young son was just saying that if the school bus doesn't come within 10 mins tomorrow he's coming right back home. The weather warning is that frostbite can occur in about 5-10 mins at these temps, so we decided to check the school website. He's in luck (lucky we checked that is!) cos there is no school the next two days anyway!

Just FYI the CBE site says that Calgary schools rarely close for bad weather, but they do not penalise students for not attending. They say it's up to the discretion of the parent, but they have to keep schools open and warm for the ninooks that do struggle in!

I suppose thay might have to close if there was some trouble with the heating.

Snow days are no fun here anyway, cos if the school is closed you'd probably not want to be playing outside nohow!

What happens is, everyone stays inside the station until the train comes, then it's a mad rush!!!

btw, I haven't seen you yet! I do keep looking ......
Well it certainly was interesting. The word SARDINES comes to mind. While I was standing in Dalhousie station looking at the sea of people in front of me, I thought this reminds me of commuting in London (minus the cold of course).

I waited for about 20 mins and managed to get on the first train. But it was a bit of a squash. The inside windows of the train were frozen and a set of doors broke at one stop.

But all in all apart from the slow start, the commute wasnt too bad for -43 with windchill.

I guess block heaters are a neccessity after all, neither car nor truck would start this morning (both 2007 models), wouldn't crank over fast enough for the engine to fire. Plugged them in, will try in a couple of hours. Means I get the wife at home for a while with nothing to do

nope, not according to channel 10 on the tv anyway. when i got in it was -40 something, do not remember the exact temp, this was with wind chill, i think it was something like -27 then add the wind which was a nightmare. having said this both cars started this morning so maybe you don't need a block heater!!.
chn 10 still quoting -40 with wind for edmonton area, 5 mins outside exposed skin freezes apparently. school buses cancelled, school closed, typically on my day off.

Well I don't have the luxury of a second car and thought I was a hardy scot walking to work all wrapped up in -35 last year but today in Drayton Valley the local radio said it -27 with winchill -48 so I said no way in hell am I walking the 15 mins to work in that. Not to mention I'd have that many layers on if I fell over I think I'd have to roll the rest of the way.

The question is, were those forecasts accurate?

My guess is no.

Do you remember which dates they were for?

The Channel 9 (Global) weatherman stated that they clocked -50 something (windchill) on their guage. I take it that was up high on a building!!!
