Re: BBC iPlayer
Doctor Who seems to get a special dispensation. I think they may only allow each episode to be up for a week or something like that. Generally, though, anything that's due for imminent DVD release isn't allowed, and as I say that *may* be what's saving them from being closed down.

Re: BBC iPlayer
maybe its cos the DR can move thru time and they cant catch him before the other sites download him!! ;)
plus they cant stand the thought of those hysterical brit kids all round the world and their poor parents!! |
Re: BBC iPlayer
.
As for the iPlayer, there are some commercial VPN services which give you a UK IP address so you can access all the official BBC, ITV and C4 video content anywhere in the world. I've got last night's EastEnders streaming from the iPlayer on my computer here in Dubai as I speak, and the quality is impressive :)[/QUOTE] This is excellent news Eyeore, thanks. Just one thing, "the quality is impressive" as your talking about Eastenders I assume you just mean the quality of the broadcast:D |

Re: BBC iPlayer
I don't know of any free ones, no. And FWIW, the BBC were always on top of the situation with the free public proxies that used to exist, and blocked them.
None of the paid-for services are particularly expensive, anyway. |
Re: BBC iPlayer
I have started to use "HIDE IP NG" when away from the UK on business and for 35 USD a year you can select an IP address in the UK or the US and it allows you to watch UK or US tv. Works well you can even watch in high quality.

Re: BBC iPlayer
Have been using BBCi player and the other main UK channels online with a working proxy for over 2 years now. Have been able to get a working one nearly everyday so far. Have had a free trail for a vpn and they work very well.

There are more techy people on here who I'm sure can give you (or him) fuller advice on how he goes about managing this, but as far as I can tell from when I used to use a VPN regularly (albeit mostly within the UK), once you've established the VPN connection to the UK office, everything that's served to your web browser will arrive via that office's server. Oh, and it's Mainwaring. ;) |

probably... not sure he has the acronyms quite right (could it be VPN PPP - virtual private network, point to point protocol?) but it sounds like he's connected to the UK office first and then 'breaks out' from there to the Internet, which would 'see' the IP address of the UK office as his point of presence.

The one thing the kids are moaning about - - -We wont get to see the Dr Who Christmas special . . . Re: BBC iPlayer
Probably VPN via PPTP (love acronyms, Virtual Private Network via Point to Point Tunnelling Protocol  ).
He'll need to make sure he's using the connection at the other end to break out - should be a checkbox somewhere in the VPN connection settings/properties that says "use the remote networks default gateway" or something along those lines. Can't remember whether it's enabled or disabled by default. |
