BBC iPlayer

Hi, does anyone know if the iPlayer is available in Ca. I just assumed it would be but I tried to watch a TV programme on an american Real player of some description the other night and it was restricted to USA. This could be a major disaster, might have to rethink the whole thing:confused:

The simple answer is no, it's not. You'll be able to survive without it :)

Just VPN in to your employers UK office :D Not got one? Shame :p I don't think my son would have survived our first year here without his Saturday night dose of Doctor Who. Also pretty good for listening to the test match, just a shame about the result :(

Would probably cost too much to parents or else require a fair amount of techy tinkering. However VPN into offices is pretty standard nowadays, it stands for Virtual Private Networking and is the main way people who work from home connect to their office networks. If your OH can connect to the network from home then he probably already has it and it will work from anywhere in the world.

I wanted to do that, but unfortunately Wii does not (yet) have a VPN client so can not connect through that method. However I made do by connecting a spare laptop to my plasma and surround system and now download the iPlayer stuff to watch it in hi res with surround sound!

Only video is restricted to UK only.

All BBC radio is apparently available: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/radio

True for iPlayer but not for live broadcasts. Test match and other live sporting events are usually through radio 5 and that also has a UK only restriction.

Oops, I stand corrected it seems iPlayer does now stream 5 extra live, so it might work, I shall find out on Thursday. Obviously it is different to picking the (non-iPlayer) link from the main bbc sports pages which is how I've accessed it until now.

I joined UKNova which allows a certain number of new accounts each day - you can download UK only shows that are not due for DVD release. Managed to watch the whole series of Doctor Who and Torchwood! Didn't miss a single episode! Plus a few others too - fantastic. Just bought a replacement monitor cable that plugged from the hard drive to the tv and we can watch it on the bigger screen and not squint at the 17 inch pc monitor from 25 ft away.

Sorry to detract from the slanging match going on - but thought the op may be interested in how to get UK programs in Canada.

I would have thought that Doctor Who would be due for DVD release, I am sure that previous series have gone to DVD? Do you know what quality the UKNova shows are in terms of video and audio? Are they widescreen? I am looking out for an alternative to iPlayer because even if you download the shows you can only keep them for 30 days.

I wasn't aware there was a slanging match, I was out for a few hours and came back to a load of deleted posts. Was it any good?

It's a yes if you follow those instructions (apparently) - I've not tried them yet as I'm not in Canada for another 3 and a bit weeks....

Re: BBC iPlayer

Hi again, Doctor Who was uploaded onto the UKNova site on the night it aired in the UK, so with the time difference, we managed to download it and watch it every saturday night as normal!! Each episode was only available for 1 week from the upload date. There are various 'rules' as to what is available for download - it HAS to be from the UK and made my UK companies, so anything like, for example, The Simpsons (if you were desperate enough) couldn't be accessed as its a US programme although shown on UK tv.

The quality has been superb. As mentioned, we put the picture through our tv (which is 40") and the picture is great. The only 'downside' which I'm sure is just our techie stuff in the house, is that we listen to it through the pc speakers and not the tv - but it works just fine. I'm sure that a more 'gadget' minded person could sort this out, but we're ok with it.

Here's the site address if it helps www.uknova.com

Just wanted to add that it's nothing to do with Nova Scotia - but a UK site accessed worldwide.

Re: BBC iPlayer

Just be aware that as far as I can see, UKNova is just as illegal as other file sharing sites.

Re: BBC iPlayer

Why is it illegal?

Because they are sharing copywritten material

Well if it does not have the permission from the BBC to distribute the media then it will be guilty of copyright infringement. iPlayer is of course a BBC site and the BBC holds the copyright to the material they broadcast through it. That is why you don't see everything that appears on the BBC channels through iPlayer, some of it they di not own the copyright and therefore can only broadcast it once.

Nicola N-A Aug 6th 2008 1:54 am

Re: BBC iPlayer

fair enough, but personal choice whether to use them or not. Nothing available that is on the market for sale - you go buy it.

Re: BBC iPlayer

so is Uknova not an official site ? is it like using Limewire ?

cue for some donut to start absuing me . . . .

PaulandNikki Aug 6th 2008 2:00 am

Re: BBC iPlayer

As far as I can see, it's just a membership based file sharing community rather than an open one, not official in any way.
Not going to judge or say whether it's right or wrong to use, just be aware that it is still illegal downloading :)

Eeyore Aug 6th 2008 8:17 pm

Re: BBC iPlayer

UK Nova is indeed as illegal as any other torrent site, and all the UK broadcasters know it exists. What might be saving them, though, is the fact that they don't allow sharing of anything that's available to buy on DVD or which will be coming out on DVD within a short period of its broadcast - they didn't allow the most recent series of Peep Show, for example, because that was scheduled for DVD release just a week or so after the final episode was shown.

As for the iPlayer, there are some commercial VPN services which give you a UK IP address so you can access all the official BBC, ITV and C4 video content anywhere in the world. I've got last night's EastEnders streaming from the iPlayer on my computer here in Dubai as I speak, and the quality is impressive :)

The4BellsLondon Aug 6th 2008 8:21 pm

Re: BBC iPlayer

hmm - but Nicola SAID she got Dr WHo and Torchwood day after they aired in uk and they both went to dvd when the series' finished!! odd!

Eeyore Aug 6th 2008 8:25 pm

Re: BBC iPlayer

Doctor Who seems to get a special dispensation. I think they may only allow each episode to be up for a week or something like that. Generally, though, anything that's due for imminent DVD release isn't allowed, and as I say that *may* be what's saving them from being closed down.

The4BellsLondon Aug 6th 2008 8:32 pm

Re: BBC iPlayer

maybe its cos the DR can move thru time and they cant catch him before the other sites download him!! ;)

plus they cant stand the thought of those hysterical brit kids all round the world and their poor parents!!

Just one thing, "the quality is impressive" as your talking about Eastenders I assume you just mean the quality of the broadcast:D

I'm kind of new at this...are there any freebie sites you could recommend that could spoof my IP address so I can view the BBC content (especially 5 Live when there is a decent footie match on) that won't screw up my router.

Eeyore Aug 7th 2008 5:06 am

Re: BBC iPlayer

I don't know of any free ones, no. And FWIW, the BBC were always on top of the situation with the free public proxies that used to exist, and blocked them.

None of the paid-for services are particularly expensive, anyway.

Re: BBC iPlayer

I have started to use "HIDE IP NG" when away from the UK on business and for 35 USD a year you can select an IP address in the UK or the US and it allows you to watch UK or US tv. Works well you can even watch in high quality.

The new series of Doctor Who is airing on CBC, Sept 19th at 9pm. I have set my Cogecco box to series link it - brilliant!!!
