Here getting a buck off a bottle is a big deal.
I guess it depends on what you buy. We don't often buy stuff with a date on it.

Two floors of elborate shop fittings. Unionised staff with benefits. Service when they feel like it. The LCBO is very much a government department.

Contrast that with Applejack's Discount Liquor Barn which looks like a K Mart but keeps wines discounted 50% to $1500 or Trader Joe's, the home of the excellent Two Buck Chuck California Cabs. What we need isn't beer in corner stores; it's wine in Loblaws, President's Choice Chardonney.

What is needed is Tesco to open shop in Toronto, gain majority control of the market like they have here then use their influence on the government to allow them to sell alcohol...

Then you will see 5 bottles of wine for $5 :P

Unfortunately alcohol sales in Canada are largely a provincial government run monopoly so Tesco's wouldn't be allowed to open a shop and sell wines. Nor would Loblaws, etc etc. No competition means no price discounting. It's the Canadian way.

There's more to it than that, the Liquor Control Board of Ontario really is as much about control as about sales, there's a strong moralist current in Ontario; not so much born again or neo-con as always Presby.

I quite agree. I have on several occasions asked LCBO staff why it is necessary to spend lots of money, tax-payers' money, on snazzy shopfitting, uniforms and branding when they operate a monopoly.

Indeed... However, when your company value is greater than the value of entire eastern nations, you tend to have some clout with governments..

(Not that I think that is always a good thing!)

Walmart and Weston dominate retail in Canada. They've had no luck.

For once, I'd like to see Walmart succeed.

My local Costco sells booze. It's no cheaper than anywhere else, which is a bit telling, and the wine section has an SAQ sign on it, which is also a rather clear sign as to who's in charge.

If you smoke then that may be a harder adjustment, generally Canadians don't drink much and are very sanctimonious about cigarettes, though they are huge stoners. Luckily, everyone in the food service business smokes and drinks.

Well I HAD quit up until I got some Canadian smokes left infront of me the week before last...

Now I'm back to 30 cups of coffee a day and too many cigs!

Don't drink much? - Clearly I know the low brows, no brows and ignorami of Toronto then? haha..

I'm not sure I agree about the drinking. It's certainly true that "session" drinking is less common here but I think that there is a lot of drinking going on in the home. My local gas station stocks more beer than my local supermarket. Two more gas stations within a half-mile radius also carry vast stocks. Stroll around my neighbourhood when it's nice and the garage doors are open and you'll see the stacks of 24s.
