Default Another car thread. Over 15 years old.

I understand I can bring a car into Canada if it is over 15 years old. When we move, we will have surplus room in our 40ftr so we intend bringing a car with us. Does anyone know what cars over 15 years old are worth more in canada than UK, i see a means of paying for this container if all goes well.

example, 15 year old diesel defender LHD about £7k, they seem to be advertised in Canada for between $15 and $25k, any other brands that are reasonably cheap, Aston Martins are out of my league.

Also, are there any rules regarding how long i have to keep it in Canada before disposing of it and how long do i have to own it before shipping. Lastly, any tax or inspections required?
This should do for now, I'm sure the rest will fall into place.fletch

Mini's

Old ones

As far as I'm aware there are no rules on how you you need own it or to keep it,
I believe you pay tax on the purchase price, but if its in your goods to follow maybe not? I don't know about that side of importing a car

I didn't get inspected for cleanliness but some have and if it need washing (and the washing water disposed of) that can set you back a few bob

Yup thats about it. If you did decide to sell it within the 12 months you would be liable to pay taxes applicable. No need for vehicle to be registered with the RIV. 15 years is from the date of manufacture not model year.

ahh... I imported my mini 5 years after landing and had to pay tax on it, so it would seem if you want to bring it in tax free, you'll need to keep it for a while... seems fair...

Granted the Pst on a an old mini doesn't amount to much.. so you have options

Well a trip round AutoTrader.co.uk for Nottingham(mums) will turn up a load of old mini's for betwen £850 and £2000

And on Autotrader.ca for Toronto 1 for $12,000...

Would you ship them over for doing up and then sell them on? I suspect you could get 8 minis in a 40ftr. I take it they have to be in really good nick in Canada?

FL, do you know if there is a limit to the number you can bring over, 1 for me and 1 for Mrs fletch, would that be OK?

Any item on your goods to follow list must be retained for a year or else pay the duties and taxes.

Disposing of goods you brought into Canada duty- and tax-free

If you sell or give the goods away within the first year of importing them into Canada, duty- and tax-free, you will have to pay any applicable duty and taxes immediately. If you divert the goods for commercial use, the same rule applies.

Sorry, just seen the other responses - I had written this but got called away from the computer, just posted without reading the additional replies.

This one might be useful though: http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/roadsafety/s...-index-443.htm

It depends on how much you want to make..

There were couple of lads east of Toronto who were doing just that, buying up UK side, filling up a container, and doing them up and selling them ..

Ebay and a few of the mini sites will give you an idea of what you can sell for at the various levels of rust...

But I reckon a good UK £2,500 to £3000 mini would easily make the $10,000+ here
Its the shipping that keeps up that value, we paid around $4000 shipping and taxes to import our mini..
Depending on paint quality and engine size I reckon there's a profit to be made on almost all levels (if you have the shipping portion already covered)
From what I can work out R/H drive is a plus not a negative in mini's here
The 1275 engine is more desirable
The cooper seems to be the most desirable model, so much so that I see may other models painted up to look like coopers but with the wrong engine or interior specs..

I’d take a look around some of the US and Canadian mini forums and see what they are selling and buying and then see what’s available in your area…

This one has had almost 16 thousand views, they clearly have a big following, defenders look like serious money makers, though I do see your point about Mini Coopers. I wonder if Dave n Ailsa is following this thread, when you do, i would be interested in your views.

Any make or model that is quintessentially British will resale well..
As you said earlier Aston martin is an obvious but expensive choice..
But MG’s, Landover’s, Sprites, Lotus, Caterram’s are all good options
The only reason I know about Mini's is I imported one and have had a lot of offers

Dave n Ailsa is an unknown quantity at this point
Default Re: Another car thread. Over 15 years old.

If we still had our RX7 FD (latest model) we would most definately be taking that. They seem to love their RX-7's over there, but I've never seen an FD model in Canada and if you do, it will probably be a RHD. This is not necessarily a bad thing, as it is in keeping with the whole "JDM Yo" thing the kids like.

...... Just looked up Kijiji and there's one for sale for $8500 lol, so scrap that idea

If it's still for sale by the time we get over I might buy it

Dont see why not as long as you meet the ownership regs as per para 15.
Legally you could buy as many as you want again providing you meet the requirements.
