Now, conservatives that I'm used to here and in the UK are generally ordinary people. The politicians on the left / right might have different policies to each other, they might well be self serving; but usually you wouldn't say they were mentally ill.
The americans on the other hand are madder than a barrel of rabid monkeys on acid. This Ann Coutler women for instance - I can't think of any other way to describe her other than batshit crazy.

I don't think Ann Coulter is any more bonkers than Jan Moir.

There're bonkers people everywhere, especially when it comes to national political opinion, take for instance British working class conservatism which raised such a nasty spectre over the 1980s. That said, I have to agree with Alan, the American version is a rather more virulent and disturbing strain.

I offer the postings of airbornesapper as refutation of the idea that there's a difference between the far right in the US and in the UK. I think you will find there all the elements the characterise the American far right; spluttering incoherence, indiscriminate hatred, faulty logic and an inability to reconcile daily reality with ideologically driven perception; a military man for small government is an example of the latter contradiction.

Yes, you get hatred everywhere. I guess I should have added a disclaimer based on my opinion being formed watching jon stewart.

I think its the overwhelming conviction that God is one of them (US Right wing) that I find most objectionable (of many objectionable things)
On the other hand the fuss over Ann Coulter was ridiculous. Let the woman speak.
Then arrest her for hate crimes
I suppose the university chap was just trying to cover his arse. That didnt work out too well for him

Right-wingers love to rant, that's probably their most endearing quality. But they're usually too busy apoplecting to understand that if everyone did indeed think the way they do, there would be nothing left to rant at, and they would disappear in a puff of self-righteous smoke. They need to be angry at something, it's their raison d'etre.
Stoke 'em up, say I. Encourage them to get all fired up, with pumping fists and whooping. Toss in a few comments like "Yeah! Damn Chinese!", or "Stinkin' Arabs!" or "Healthcare commies!" and watch 'em go. Like a greyhound chasing its tail...

My favourite contradiction was somebody describing themselves as a "Conservative Libertarian" where the rule of law comes from God. That was that crazy guy on fox news - Glenn Beck I think.

Perhaps she could debate with George Galloway, in Buffalo or San Pierre Miquelon, some place convenient to Canada but not actually in Canada. Controversial opinions aren't welcome here.

I'd forgotten about him. They didn't even let him in the country.
