Re: Advice please

I guess I'll chip in here.

Long before I joined this discussion board a couple of years back, I would read the various threads and would see Butch's comments. There would be lots of inoffensive banter, a significant number of posts where he would contribute helpfully to threads where folk were looking for an opinion and a number of posts that were a bit close to or maybe over the mark (in my view anyway - given that interpretation of the rules has a degree of subjectivity attached - part of what makes being a mod such a thankless task perhaps).

I don't think too much has changed in that respect, although granted, I don't spend as much time here as I once did and I respect Christmasoompa's view that we don't get to see some posts as the mods get there first to delete them. I do still see lots of inoffensive banter from Butch, threads where he contributes helpfully and some where I think "ouch!" Maybe it's not Butch that has changed significantly. Perhaps this is more an evolution of general (and mod) perceptions about what is acceptable and what is not under the rules.

Like one or two others on this thread, I have met Butch and he is a good person. He is articulate and intelligent and there is no doubt he understands the rules, although his interpretation of what is acceptable and what is not would seem to vary from that of the mods sometimes. Personally, I would like to see him remain on the discussion boards as there is a wealth of knowledge and experience there that he can share. After so many thousands of posts, (the vast majority of which will not have breached anyone's interpretations of the rules), I rather doubt Butch is going to change his posting style a great deal so, although I didn't bother to vote, it seems to me (having read this thread) that the most likely outcome is that he will post as he feels and accept the consequences.

ERM,

Thank you I think. May I just say you appear to be the sole voice of reason in the desert (and NOT just because you appear to be 'supporting' me).

We apply the rules impartially, but you seem to think that the mods here should also be devoid of opinions and refrain from posting on topics just as regular members do.

We still have opinions, we still post as if we were regular forum members, which of course we did long before being asked to mod . In fact, when I was invited to mod, my only question was whether I would be expected to modify my posting, and the answer was a clear no. Maybe your experience on other fora is different, but then this isn't other fora.

If you have a problem with my opinions, fine, that's your right, argue against them in a civilised way if you wish. If you have a problem with how we moderate, fine, take it up with "The powers that be", in private, although Sue seems to have made her opinions pretty clear here.

If any of you dont like the way it is, well, dont let the door hit you on the way out, because its not going to get any more easy going. The rules remain the same and they will be applied impartially as best we can as occasionally flawed human beings.

Yes I do have my own opinion's and I am expressing them in a civilised manner, I and I believe others have expressed their opinions to the powers that be. I'm sure you'll agree that as long as I post within the rules then I have the right to express my opinions and I'm sure you'll agree that my posts on this thread including this one are within the rules.

One of which is that judgement can become clouded when you become involved in discussion.............not that I'm saying that anyone acts like that on here, I'm just saying its human nature.

I dont think getting involved in a discussion is going to impare a mods judgement of whether rules are broken or not. The rules are not super complicated, we dont require the supreme court to interpret them. What you do need is a thick skin to ignore all the cliques and little social clubs and the like here. I hear we are discussed on Facebook? Seriously, people have nothing better to do?

I would estimate that maybe 90% of the time moderator action is triggered by others reporting posts anyway, but of course if we happen to see something first that's clearly out of order we will head that off at the pass.

If its any consolation the mods do discuss many issues in private in the background, and that includes mods from outside the Canada fora who are not involved personally. Its not like we operate entirely in a vacuum. And the funny thing is, most of the other mods express surprise at our tolerance level.

Gosh is this still going - I had assumed Butch was drunk.

If this flouncing is genuine then it's a stellar performance, I especially like the fact that it's spread across multiple threads (nice touch butch). It's the flounciest flounce I've ever seen that's for sure.

dam it

Iaink

on most of the decent forums I’ve been on the Moderators don't need to defend their actions, they ban the irritations before they become a problem

IMHO this place requires a clean up

I am surprised by this,as you both come across as overzealous in your reactions to potential misdemeanors.

Name some? Its easy to accuse anyone of being overzealous but without evidence to support this its just an unfounded accusation. I would be interested in your interpretation of overzealous.

you see, that's just the kind of thing that people... well, some people... well, I at least - find irritating. You know perfectly well who his comment was aimed at, and it's a bit juvenile to pretend not to. If that sort of playground level of humour appeals, carry on, and I'll use my ignore button - which will be a shame, as I've only ever ignored a couple of people (AdrianTO and one other, can't even remember who now), and since much of what you post is helpful and/or amusing I wouldn't want to miss it. But this mega-flounce, and the imbecilic misinterpretation of other people's comments, is petty and pathetic and it should stop.

OK, just to clear something up, at what point did I say I would flounce.
I think most of you have missed the point(s)

1) This thread was offering myself as a sacrificial lamb.
2) I had intended to give people a vehicle to vent re:
a) Posters like myself
b) The mods

Perhaps I should change my name to everyman or class clown? Perhaps then people would better see where I am usually comimg from?

As Iain so rightly said this forum is discussed on Farcebook, sadly few of the people who 'complain' on there have the balls to come and complain on here.
SO I offered myself up as the 'victim'.

Given the response of one or two I'm damn sorry I did, but at least I now know where I stand with them.

As for my response to MikeUK why was that anymore (or less) petty than the majority of his comments?

Does innuendo really break rule 2.
They are also very good at interpreting banter as malice.

Please provide specific examples then by PM.

I have said MANY times I am open to receiving feedback, but all I get is positive "dont let them get you down" messages. If people have something to say about the forum, then say it to our faces, not behind our back on Facebook:frown:

In my time as a mod I have temporarily banned a grand total of two users, and both times it had the desired effect. CO has NEVER banned anyone other than spammers to my knowledge. Thats hardly "overzealous" in my opinion. Its pretty clear that if you post outside the guidelines, and it gets reported, then the mods will edit or delete.

However the harping about the moderation on this forum (in more than just this one thread) is detracting from the forums intended purpose, and if it continues, then action will be taken to clean it up , for better or worse.

If people are unhappy, and cant be bothered to find out both sides, well thats just too bad I'm afraid.

iaink Jul 30th 2009 4:11 am

Re: Advice please

And before this gets any more personal, Im closing it, and will edit out anything resembling a personal attack.

OK, so make that three temporary bans now. Any more for any more?
