Living on Vancouver Island where we don't really have extremes of weather and at the risk of being stupid, why do you water your chickens?

I tried to explain the issue to a woman here who got the idea that it froze instantly. She was concerned that the chickens' beaks were frozen to it like childrens' tongues and lamp posts.
