the more you try and avoid the tolls by going into belgium, lux etc the more miles you put on your trip and the more you pay in fuel especially through the alps. also i have heard that swiss border guards are real strict and confiscate duty free (ha!) that was bought on the ferry.we printed off a few routes before we left and it was just so much easier to autoroute it.
one print out came up with 136 route changes to avoid tolls and we would have still had to pay £40 in tolls that you couldn't easily avoid.
we are going down on motorbikes next year, the tolls for bikes are a lot less.
you can save money by buying fuel from petrol stations away from the autoroute(up to 20% cheaper fuel)
might even be cheaper to fly and rent a car. never done it so dont quote me on that

I've a friend who always goes a toll free route. If no one gives you a route I'll email her.

Magic...... and if you would kindly ask her what to expect?..... Google map shows it to be onle a couple of miles longer at 750 miles where as the toll way is 744..... If I drive 10 hours a day at 40 miles per hour that'll be perfect..... With the tolls at £150, I'll be saving £15 per hour as I drive.

Route avoiding all but one Toll so a 6.90 euro toll cost 1367 km Time 16h40 if you are lucky. Petrol Cost 130.66 EUR

Route using Tolls cost for tolls 121.20 EUR and motorways 1202kms Time 11h16m Petrol cost 112.68 EUR

Petrol costs are based on 1,30 per litre.

Google is your friend and so is ViaMichelin.

Touch wood... there and back, full up with tools, clothes etc. Up and down mountains...... and the perfect car for driving round Palermo. But in the future I'll be going back and forth in a van...... Just want the most cost effective route...........tried and tested by others who have done the trip themselves.

If you really want to be silly go via Munich! I've done Munich to Bruges in about 9 hours. Up the Rhine then thru n. France from Strasbourg. No clue if this helps for Dunkirk as I haven't looked at a map....never mind GPS....
