one print out came up with 136 route changes to avoid tolls and we would have still had to pay £40 in tolls that you couldn't easily avoid.
we are going down on motorbikes next year, the tolls for bikes are a lot less.
you can save money by buying fuel from petrol stations away from the autoroute(up to 20% cheaper fuel)
might even be cheaper to fly and rent a car. never done it so dont quote me on that

My petrol from Genova to Dunkirk was £80 and the tolls were £150.... cant keep doing that..... need to get back and forth a few times a year
I just need to get in touch with someone who does it all the time

I've a friend who always goes a toll free route. If no one gives you a route I'll email her.

Magic...... and if you would kindly ask her what to expect?..... Google map shows it to be onle a couple of miles longer at 750 miles where as the toll way is 744..... If I drive 10 hours a day at 40 miles per hour that'll be perfect..... With the tolls at £150, I'll be saving £15 per hour as I drive.

email sent. One thing worries me though. I know she goes via Moncenisio. Is your car up to it?

Touch wood... there and back, full up with tools, clothes etc. Up and down mountains...... and the perfect car for driving round Palermo. But in the future I'll be going back and forth in a van...... Just want the most cost effective route...........tried and tested by others who have done the trip themselves.

If you really want to be silly go via Munich! I've done Munich to Bruges in about 9 hours. Up the Rhine then thru n. France from Strasbourg. No clue if this helps for Dunkirk as I haven't looked at a map....never mind GPS....
