The 12 months noted for the processing time of a low risk skilled PR visa is the service standard, not the actual current processing time. If you dig around the Aus immigration website you will discover that the dept sets at its standard (its goal) to process 75% of those visas within 12 months and 50% of them within 9 months.

the actual time it takes to be assigned a case officer will vary depending on how many applications are queued ahead of you. after that, the time to finalize your visa will vary according to how complex your application is (marriages, dependents, health, criminal record, etc. . .), whether you frontloaded all the required documents, how many other applications the case officer is handling simultaneously (which I would guess is the same for all CO's), and finally how motived the case officer is to get people through (or how lazy they are).

i've applied for a state sponsored 176. appears those are taking 7-9 months as of now. hoping it doesnt take longer. may just take a working holiday to new zealand while i wait.

You're teaching most of us to suck eggs here mate

Read back through this thread you'll see there's no rhyme or reason to processing times. Not sure where you got your lovely sounding information (do you work for DIAC?!!) but it's certainly not that nice and neat in reality! If only it was

I'm a perfect example of this chaotic system: a paperbased 176 granted 5 months after application in March, when there are completely straightforward frontloaded online applications still waiting from 07.

That post was simply to try to help people feeling like they were going crazy when they had had their expectations unrealistically set by circulating rumour etc.

Hi pshriv, I am also from a high risk country similar to yours. Would you mind sharing with us what additional info your CO requested at each phase? Looks like you had several requests. Your response will help us stay prepared, or at least stay informed of what might be forthcoming, though I understand each case is different. Thanks.

I was simply noting that the 12 months indicated by DIAC is not the actual processing time. like i said, with enough digging, you can find it on the DIAC website. i also found the latest annual report stating the actual processing time for the 2006-2007 and both the median and 75th percentile were less than the "standard of service".

what was so lovely sounding about it? indeed from this forum it seems as people are being granted the 176 in 7-9 months. someone posted on here that they got it under 5 months. and could you really think i work for DIAC if i'm in the midst of awaiting my own visa?

sure there are some waiting from 07. there are zillion applications and only so many case officers. some are more productive than others, and i'm sure there are plenty of other ineffeciencies through the department. it is after all govt work.

i dont know what your deal is. youve got yours.

And full credit should go to posters like that who hang around to give info and encouragement to others after their own visa has been granted :)

South Africa. I believe it is not a high risk country, but I think it is on a different region.....this may have something to do with it.

Hope you are settling well. This time can be chaotic, but it is a wonderful type of chaos.

Thanks Pollyanna. You do get so invested in this forum and how people are doing, it's like another world you never know exists until you stumble across it!

Re: Current processing times

I have chased my agent this week as we applied for a 176 state sponsored visa in February (paperbased) and this is the response I received:-

"In relation to online applications/paper applications – those lodged between August 2007 and March/April 2008 are generally going through the system at around the same timespan.

However in order to improve their published processing times, DIAC have started to push through e-lodged cases, lodged from May 2008 – in essence cases e-lodged at this time and after, are effectively jumping the queue thanks to DIAC’s method of processing. It isn’t fair or correct but that is the way they have decided to proceed."

I look forward to your comments.
